Connector assembly includes a communication connector configured to be at least one of electrically or optically coupled to a plug. The communication connector has a connector housing that includes a back side and a mating face that are on opposite ends of the connector housing. The connector assembly also includes a retention mechanism having a connector hinge and a retention clip. The connector hinge is a portion of the connector housing or is coupled to the connector housing. The retention clip has a panel, a hinge arm, and a plug arm. The panel extends between and couples to the hinge and plug arms. The hinge arm grips the connector hinge such that the retention clip is rotatable about the connector hinge between open and locked positions. The plug arm is shaped to press the plug toward the mating face when the retention clip is in the locked position.

Connector assembly and retention mechanism configured to maintain a mated relationship

A connector assembly including an outer housing having a front end, a back end, and a central axis extending therebetween. The outer housing has a passage that extends therethrough. The connector assembly also includes a slidable connector that is disposed within the passage. The slidable connector includes a communication module. The connector assembly also includes a spring frame that is positioned between the slidable connector and the outer housing. Prior to mating with a mating connector, the spring frame mechanically couples the slidable connector with respect to the outer housing. After the mating connector and the communication module are communicatively coupled, the spring frame releases the slidable connector from the outer housing such that the slidable connector is permitted to move relative to the outer housing. The spring frame mechanically couples the slidable connector relative to the mating connector.

An optical communication connector having a connector housing that includes opposite mating and loading sides and a housing cavity that extends therebetween. The optical communication connector also includes an optical module that is positioned within the housing cavity and a biasing element that is positioned between the optical module and the loading side in the housing cavity. The biasing element has a module end, a back end, and a resilient spring portion that extends between the module and back ends. The spring portion includes an elongated body having a plurality of flexible bend segments that wrap back-and-forth within a spring plane. The spring portion is compressible between first and second states during a mating operation between the optical module and an optical connector.

Optical communication connectors with modules movable in a mating direction

A housing for an optical connector including a top wall, a bottom wall, a first side wall and a second side wall forming a passageway and a rear opening; a rear portion for receiving a first optical connector; a rectangular opening located on the top wall of the rear portion, wherein the rectangular opening extending from the rear opening along length of the rear portion of the top wall; a rectangular channel located on the bottom wall extending from the rear opening, wherein width of the channel is substantially equal to width of a stop located on distal end of the bottom wall of the connector; and a first notch located on the first side wall and a second notch located on the second side wall, wherein the first and second notches are capable of engaging with projections located on the connector when the connector is inserted into the housing.

Optical connector housing assembly with dual insertion and extraction options

The invention pertains to an optical coupling method and apparatus in which the connectors are hermaphroditic and each connector comprises a ferrule that provides (1) the coarse alignment of the fibers, (2) the fine alignment of the fibers, and (3) the releasable latching of two such ferrules to each other. Hence, two such ferrules can be used to connect optical fibers without the need for connector housings. The ferrule of this system includes an alignment protrusion and a complementary alignment hole on the front face of the ferrule for providing the fine alignment. Coarse alignment is provided by longitudinally-directed protrusions extending forwardly of the front face, and recesses in the ferrule that are complementary to the protrusion such that two such ferrules can be mated to each other with the protrusions of one such ferrule fitting snugly within the recesses of the other such ferrule. A releasable latching mechanism is provided on one or more of the protrusions and its complementary recess, such as a bump on one of the protrusion and recess and a mating divot on the other.

Hermaphroditic optical fiber ferrule

A photonic assembly includes a midplane connector having connector channels extending therethrough. Fiber optic connectors are positioned within the connector channels of the midplane connector. The fiber optic connectors retain ferrules of midplane optical fibers and aligning the ferrules of the midplane optical fibers within the midplane connector. A midplane substrate is provided having an opening extending therethrough. The midplane connector is positioned within the opening of the midplane substrate. The midplane connector floats within the opening of the midplane substrate to position the ferrules of the midplane optical fibers.

Photonic assembly for optical fibers

A fiber optic cable assembly includes a connector that has a mating end and a cable end. A fiber optic cable is terminated to the cable end of the connector. A cable director is coupled to the fiber optic cable rearward of the connector. The cable director includes a flexible support sleeve and a clip extending from the support sleeve. The support sleeve includes a raceway that receives the fiber optic cable. The support sleeve has a first end segment and a second end segment. The support sleeve has a first attachment point proximate to the first end segment and a second attachment point proximate to the second end segment. The support sleeve is held in a bent shape when the clip is attached to both the first attachment point and the second attachment point. The support sleeve is configured to be straightened to a loading position in which the raceway is substantially linear when the clip is removed from at least one of the first or second attachment points.

Fiber optic cable assembly

The invention pertains to a modular optical connection system that permits simple swapping of optical connectors of different form factor types. Furthermore, it allows a single optical connector design of a given form factor to be used to make optical connectors in various different board-to-board configurations, such as orthogonal, coplanar, and backplane. In accordance with the invention, an outer housing is mounted on a board which housing allows two inner housings to mate with each other through the outer housing. A single outer housing can be used with different inner housings adapted to accept various different connector form factors therein and permits the two mating inner housings to float longitudinally within the outer housing. It also allows the two mating inner housings to engage and disengage via simple push engagement and pull disengagement. The external dimensions and features of all of the different connector housings are essentially identical to each other so that they all can mate with each other and with the outer housing, but have different internal dimensions and features depending on the particular connector form factor style for which they are designed.

Modular optical connector apparatus and method

A fiber optic connector assembly includes a coupling interface component, a connector housing, and an optical fiber connector. The coupling interface component extends along a center axis from a back end to a coupling end and includes an interior chamber. The connector housing is disposed within the interior chamber of the coupling interface component. The optical fiber connector is joined to an optical fiber and is interconnected with the connector housing. The optical fiber connector is configured to optically couple the optical fiber with a mating connector. The coupling interface component engages the connector housing and the mating connector and prevents movement of the connector housing relative to the coupling interface component and the mating connector.

Fiber optic connector assembly

A fiber optic connector assembly includes a connector housing, a connector base, and an optical fiber connector. The connector housing extends along a center axis from a mating end to a cable receiving end with a passage extending therebetween. The mating end is received in a mating connector that is mounted to a panel. The connector base is secured to the mating end of the connector housing and includes a channel extending therethrough. The channel receives an optical fiber. The optical fiber connector is coupled to the optical fiber and mates with the mating connector to optically couple the optical fiber with the mating connector. The optical fiber connector is slidably joined to the connector base to permit the optical fiber connector to axially move along the center axis relative to the connector housing when the connector housing mates with the mating connector.

Fiber optic connector system

A connector assembly configured to connect a plug body into a receiving module of an electrical device is provided. The connector assembly has a cable end and a plug end and a cable channel extending therethrough. The connector assembly includes an inner body having and an outer housing that is coupled to and surrounds at least a portion of the inner body. The outer housing is configured to attach to the electrical device. The connector assembly further includes a plug having the plug body and at least one cable conductor extending through the cable channel and connecting to the plug body. The plug body is held near or within the inner body and is movable from a first position near or within the inner body to a second position engaged with the receiving module.

A connector assembly is provided that has a plug end and a cable end and is configured to insert a plug that is coupled to a cable into a receiving module of an electrical device. The connector assembly includes an inner body that has a cable channel extending in an axial direction between the plug end and the cable end. The connector assembly also includes a slider element that is configured to hold a plug proximate to the plug end. The slider element is held by and movable along the inner body in an axial direction. The connector assembly further includes an outer housing that surrounds the inner body and the slider element. The outer housing is movable in the axial direction with respect to the inner body and the slider element, and the outer housing is also configured to attach to the electrical device.

The present invention provides an optical component having an integral optical array interface formed along a mating face. The optical interface has an optical connector section extending from a front wall and a plurality of lead in surfaces also extending from the front wall adjacent to the optical interface.

The present invention provides an optical interconnection system capable of connecting a plurality of optical array connectors between assemblies. The optical array connectors are arranged to minimize the board real estate occupied by the assembly. Safety features are provided for preventing light from escaping in both the mated and unmated condition.
