A system and a method are provided for detecting a bag that has been subjected to a process, such as illumination, wherein the contents of the bag require processing before subsequent use. The system (1) has a drawer (10) on which one or more bags may be placed and properly oriented. Punches (22) are provided for punching slugs from the bag indicative of a status of the processing of the bag. The punches (22) are aligned with die apertures (26) of a die (24) and corresponding punch apertures (20) through the drawer (10). The bag may include polarizing materials (50) such that the status of the processing of the bag (52) may be sensed. To this end, a rotating polarizing piece (70) is provided as well as a light source (34) and a sensor (38). The polarities between the polarizing piece (50) of the bag and the rotating polarizing piece (70) is monitored by the sensor (38) to indicate a condition or status of the processing of the bag and/or to further indicate tampering taking place in the process.

The present invention provides improved methods and apparatus for irradiating a product with light of a specific wavelength to activate the photoactive agent that is contained therein. To this end, in an embodiment, a device is provided that comprises a source of radiation including a plurality of light emitting diodes. Each light emitting diode includes a body portion through which radiation is transmitted. The body of the diode is surrounded by a fluid. In this regard, a first housing is provided that includes an interior that contains the light emitting diodes and a fluid. The housing includes a transparent window for allowing radiation generated by the light emitting diodes to flow through the window and irradiate a product that is in juxtaposition to the window.

A fluid-carrying bag (10) or container is provided as well as a method for forming such a bag. The bag (10) has identifiers (28a, 28b) indicating a status of the contents of the bag (10). To this end, a first layer and a second layer of preferably flexible material are sealed to form an interior (14) capable of holding a fluid. A flap (18) is provided wherein at least one hole (28a) may be punched through the flap (18) which is capable of detection by a sensor to indicate treatment of fluid within the interior (14) of the bag (10). A peristaltic pump comprising a housing (19), including a base (21), a resilient tube (27) and a peristaltic pumping fingers (31) carried by the supporting structure. The tube (27) is positionable on the base (21) in a proper position and an improper position. In the proper position, the peristaltic pumping fingers (31) can properly progressively squeeze the tube to pump a fluid through the tube and in an improper position. A door (23) is mounted on the housing (19) for movement between an open position and a closed position. A latch (25) includes a pivotable latch member (51) on the door (23) and a fixed latch member (55) on the housing (19). The pivotable latch member (51) is movable between a latching position in which the door (23) is locked in the closed position and a releasing position in which the door (23) is not locked in the closed position. If the tube (27) is in the improper position, the pivotable latch member (51) is prevented from being placed in the latching position.

An air detector according to the present invention utilizes a unitary type sensor for detecting air bubbles or columns in an infusion solution flowing through a tube. Because of a unique design for a tube-receiving groove and a cooperating abutting member, the difficulty in loading a tube heretofore encountered with the use of unitary type sensor is obviated. Thus, the tube can be loaded in the air detector easily with good reliability.

A method and device are provided for infusing a fluid into a patient via a tubing. A peristaltic pumping apparatus is provided which applies a pumping action to the tubing. A linear variable differential transformer measures the diameter of the tubing subject to the pumping action. The diameter of the tubing is measured at various times and changes in the diameter of the tubing are utilized to adjust the pumping action on the tubing.
