Polysiloxanes having vinyl or epoxy functionality. The polysiloxanes are used to form polymer-based materials having properties particularly suited for biomedical device applications. The polysiloxanes are of general formula I:

Surface modification of contact lenses

A polysiloxane comprises diaryl, dialkyl, and arylalkyl siloxane units, and further has at least a functional group. Such polysiloxane can be further copolymerized with an additional monomer to produce polymeric compositions suitable for making ophthalmic devices. The additional monomer can be selected to produce desirable properties for ophthalmic applications, such as high refractive index and/or high elongation.

The prepolymers can be used to provide surface modified contact lenses formed from one or more fumaric- or itaconic-containing prepolymers having reactive functionality that is complimentary to reactive, hydrophilic polymers.

Relatively high refractive index polymeric compositions and ophthalmic devices such as for example intraocular lenses and corneal inlays made therefrom are described herein. The preferred polymeric compositions are produced through the copolymerization of one or more aromatic-substituted polysiloxane prepolymers with one or more aromatic monomers, alkylated monomers or hydrophilic monomers.
