A method and apparatus for detecting and responding to cell swell in one or more cells of a battery includes receiving one or more indications of cell swell from switching circuitry associated with a cell, determining if the battery is fit for purpose based on the one or more indications, and performing an action responsive to the one or more indications and whether the battery is fit for purpose.

An apparatus, system and method for wirelessly charging are provided within a vehicular environment. The wireless charging system comprises a seatbelt receptacle containing a transmit coil integrated therein for transmitting a charging signal to a battery or powering a battery operated device. A repeater coil can be wirelessly coupled to the transmit coil via the seatbelt's buckle, as a buckle repeater coil or a retrofit cover repeater coil. Additional repeater coils may be added to a shoulder strap, a lap strap, or other portions of the seat belt harness for additional charging points. The additional repeater coils are slideable to adjust for different body sizes. One or more portable devices having receive coils can be charged or powered wirelessly from the transmit coil in the seatbelt receptacle, the repeater coil of the seatbelt buckle or cover, and/or the additional adjustable strap repeater coils.

Apparatus, system and method for in-vehicle wireless charging

Embodiments include a modular battery charger having a main charging source and is configured to include at least one additional charging source that can be an auxiliary charging source or an external charging source. The additional charging sources can be added as modules to augment the total charging current that can be provided to a rechargeable battery. The modular battery charger can selectively enable or disable the additional charging sources while controlling the output current of the main charging source to adjust the charging current provided to a rechargeable battery.

Electrochemical cell with singular coupling and method for making same

A current interrupt device for rechargeable, electrochemical cells having a safety valve, insulating spacer and a thin metal plate for coupling to an electrode assembly is provided. The thin metal plate electrically couples to the safety valve by way of a conductive polymer, preferably having a positive temperature coefficient characteristic. The positive temperature coefficient characteristic is such that the impedance of the polymer increases with increasing temperature. In normal operation, the polymer conducts current. In high current situations, where internal components heat due to parasitic resistances, the polymer becomes an insulator and disconnects the cell from the exterior can. When gasses build within the cell, the safety valve deforms, thereby causing the safety valve to separate from the thin metal plate. Once the safety valve and thin metal plate have separated, the electrode assembly is electrically isolated from the exterior can.

The first collector is electrically connected to a runner by a first plated through-hole (70), and the second collector is electrically connected to the second contact portion through a second plated through-hole (72). And finally, a fringe portion (68) is provided by the base layer about the periphery of the first and second halves. Upon assembly, an electrochemical cell stack is place on one half of the circuit board, the other half is folded over the cell stack, and the fringe portion of the first half is sealed to the fringe portion of the second half.
