The present invention relates to electrostatic dissipative polymeric compositions comprising a polyether polyurethane which can be blended with one or more base polymers. In some applications, the polyurethane is useful without further blending. Further, the polyurethane blends can be blended with glass beads or glass fibers which have a synergist effect when combined with the electrostatic dissipative agent.

Thermoplastic molding compositions and articles comprise immiscible thermoplastic polymer components and reinforcing fibers. The immiscible thermoplastic polymer components and the fibers are blended together under high shear conditions. The molding composition generally contains at least two phases and has an extremely smooth and fiber-free surface. Generally, other very good physical properties are obtained such as high heat distortion temperatures, high tensile modulus, high flex modulus, and the like are also very good. A desired blend of thermoplastic components is thermoplastic polyurethane and modified polyethylene terephthalate with glass fibers. A polyurethane resin is synthesized from a reaction mixture of at least one phosphorus compound, an epoxy compound, a polyisocyanate, a polyfunctional hydroxy compound, and optionally a chain extender. The weight average molecular weight of the polyurethane resin is from about 10,000 to about 250,000. A magnetic coating formulation is comprised of principally of magnetic particles and a binder. A magnetic recording media comprises a laminate as in the form of a magnetic layer composed principally of magnetic particles and a binder wherein at least a portion of the binder is the polyurethane resin. The substrate of the magnetic recording medium is a suitable polymer such as polyester, and the like. The utilization of the polyurethane resin containing a phosphorus compound therein results in excellent dispersion of the magnetic particles as well as exceptional durability.

The high molecular weight thermoplastic polyurethane comprises the polymeric reaction product of an ethylene ether oligomer glycol intermediate co-reacted with a non-hindered diisocyanate and an extender glycol to produce the polyurethane polymer. The ethylene ether oligomer glycol intermediate is selected from (a) a diethylene glycol-aliphatic linear polyester or (b) a polyethylene glycol. The oligomer glycol intermediate has an average molecular weight from about 500 to about 5,000.

Improved electron beam curable compounds are prepared by mixing 100 weight parts of (1) polyurethanes prepared from polymeric polyols, organic diisocyanates and polyethers having terminal hydroxyl and unsaturated groups, or terminal hydroxyl and pendant unsaturated groups with (2) 1 to 25 weight parts of an acrylate or alkacrylate terminated polyurethanes prepared by reacting isocyanate terminated prepolymers of hydroxyl terminated polymers with hydroxyl-terminated acrylates or alkacrylates. Compositions of this blend may be crosslinked or cured in a few seconds by electron beam to provide an improved stable coating that can be cured to a variety of hardnesses. These polyurethanes combined with phenoxy resins also form particularly useful binder systems for magnetic tape.

Polyurethanes prepared from hydroxyl terminated polymers, organic diisocyanates and polyethers having terminal hydroxyl and unsaturated groups or terminal hydroxyl and pendant unsaturated groups, are soluble in solvents for deposition on a carrier that after removal of the solvent can be wound and processed as by calendaring and slitting immediately after removal from a solvent drying oven without layer to layer adhesion or other disruption of the coating. After such processing, the binder compositions containing the polyurethane may be crosslinked or cured in a few seconds by electron beam radiation to provide an improved stable coating.
