A network device within a data communication network includes a plurality of network interfaces, each programmed with a respective set of Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) routing entries for correlating network addresses with physical addresses. Each network interface is further programmed with an additional respective set of Longest Prefix Match (LPM) routing entries for correlating other network addresses with designated network interfaces to enable traffic matching one of the LPM routing entries to be forwarded to the appropriate designated network interface within the network device.

Distributed address resolution protocol forwarding

A bi-directional VLAN bridging path is created on an edge switch in an MVRP environment without administrator intervention using a virtual network profile (VNP) feature running on the edge switch. The VNP feature is configured to detect a device coupled to a port of the edge switch, learn the Medium Access Control (MAC) address of the device on a MVRP-VLAN and automatically convert the MVRP-VLAN to a VNP-Dynamic-VLAN corresponding to a static VLAN to create a bi-directional VLAN Port Association (VPA) for the device.

VLAN bridging path for virtual machines in MVRP environment without administrator intervention

The invention is directed to routing data packets in networks having routers configured as a virtual router using virtual router redundancy protocol (VRRP). Embodiments of the invention adjust route metrics to aid in providing predictable selection of routes into VRRP subnets. Advantageously, providing predictable selection of routes into VRRP subnets enhances a network operator's ability to meet service level agreements for critical or delay sensitive applications.
