Norbornane-2-carboxylic acid esters are disclosed, in particular the 5(6)-formyl and the 5(6)-hydroxymethylnorbornane-2-carboxylic acid esters. The 5(6)-hydroxymethyl-norbornane-2-carboxylic acid esters may be reacted with polyols to provide a di- or polyfunctional polyol ester suitable for further reaction with polyisocyanates to prepare polyurethanes.

The present invention describes the production of high molecular weight polyhydric alcohols and their derivatives. In particular the urethane reaction products of polyisocyanates and polyhydric alcohols are described.

Polyamide resins are disclosed of polymeric fat acids or certain dicarboxylic acids derived from a fatty acid and a bis(aminomethyl)tricyclodecane. Copolymerized acids or diamine or amino acids may be present. Because of the greater rigidity of some of the resins in addition to the other desirable properties of the polymeric fat acid polyamides, more application areas are opened such as the injection molded or extruded structural parts and components in addition to their utility as adhesives.

Alkoxylated polyester polyols useful in the manufacture of polyurethanes are disclosed. For example, 9(10)-methylhydroxymethyloctadecanoate can be reacted with bishydroxymethyltricyclodecane to prepare a polyester polyol which can be ethoxylated to prepare an alkoxylated polyester polyol. The resulting polyester polyol can be reacted with a diisocyanate, such as a modified diphenylmethane diisocyanate, to prepare a urethane elastomer.
