An electrochemical cell for a secondary battery is provided, which includes a positive electrode having an intercalation cathode material of treated smectite; a negative electrode material having an anode material containing magnesium; an electrolyte positioned in contact with at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode; wherein the electrolyte comprises a solvent in which magnesium chloride, aluminum chloride, and, optionally, magnesium hexamethyldisilazide are dissolved. The solvent is one or more of 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran; 2,5-dimethyl pyridine; 2,6-dimethyl pyridine; 3,5-dimethyl pyridine; 2,5-diethyl pyridine; 2-methyl-5-ethyl-pyridine; 2-ethyl-5-methyl-pyridine; 5-ethyl-3-methyl-pyridine; and 3-ethyl-5-methyl pyridine; and, optionally, pinene and/or ocimene.

Secondary batteries with improved electrolyte

Provided herein is an electrochemical cell for a secondary battery, which includes a positive electrode having an active intercalation cathode material of treated bentonite; a negative electrode material having an active anode material containing one of magnesium and sodium; an electrolyte positioned in contact with at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode; wherein, when the active anode material contains magnesium, the electrolyte is a solid gel polymeric electrolyte; and wherein, when the active anode material is sodium, the electrolyte is a salt electrolyte, both the anode material and the electrolyte are molten at the operating temperature of the battery, and the cell further comprises a beta alumina solid electrolyte separator between the negative electrode and the electrolyte.

Secondary batteries with treated bentonite cathodes

An electrochemical cell for a secondary battery is provided, which includes a positive electrode having an intercalation cathode material of bentonite; a negative electrode material having an anode material containing one of magnesium and sodium; an electrolyte positioned in contact with at least one of the positive electrode and the negative electrode; wherein, when the anode material contains magnesium, the electrolyte is a solid gel polymeric electrolyte; and wherein, when the anode material is sodium, the electrolyte is a salt electrolyte, both the anode material and the electrolyte are molten at the operating temperature of the battery, and the cell further comprises a beta alumina solid electrolyte separator between the negative electrode and the electrolyte. To increase its conductivity, the bentonite material is treated, before cell assembly, with an acid and/or intercalated with an anilinium ion, which is then polymerized to form a polyaniline within the bentonite framework.

System, method and apparatus wherein eyewear is provided particularly suited for use in conjunction with luminescent displays such as visual display terminals and which serves to improve operator performance and reduce asthenopia. The eyewear includes a forward frame portion having a centrally disposed bridge section and right and left temple pieces extending from the frame portion. The frame supports a clear optical region dimensioned for intercepting lines of sight substantially only within the inferior field of view of the user's eyes and a translucent region intercepting and blocking lines of sight directed substantially outwardly from the mid pupillary position of the user's eyes within the superior field of view. Preferably, the clear optical region is pigmented to define an optical filter and this filter preferably is selected having a pigmentation in the yellow portion of the visible spectrum.

A combined telephone and binary clock is disclosed in which light emitting diodes are formed in the telephone push buttons and are provided with a binary coded decimal display so that telephone push buttons provide an indication of time. The clock may be periodically preset by a signal transmitted over the telephone line. An alarm circuit is included to cause the telephone to ring at a predetermined or preselected time.
