A method of making a nanoclusters functionalized with a single DNA strand comprising the steps of providing nanoclusters, combining said nanoclusters with thiolated DNA, incubating said nanoclusters and thiolated DNA mixture, combining said mixture with a solution comprising ethanol and dichloromethane; separating said mixture into an aqueous phase and an organic phase, mixing said aqueous phase with a solution comprising dicholormethane and NaCl, and separating the mixture into an aqueous phase and an organic phase; wherein said organic phase comprises said nanoclusters functionalized with a single DNA strand. Further, provided is a nanocluster functionalized with a single DNA strand comprising a nanocluster, said nanocluster being functionalized with a single DNA strand, said DNA strand having a length of about 10 to about 50 bases.

A bioactive catalytic material is disclosed for providing protection from chemical exposure. The material is composed of enzymes immobilized within polyelectrolyte multilayers and a polymerizable end-capping layer to render stability to enzymes. Also disclosed is the related method for making a bioactive catalytic material and their deposition on substrates of varying size, shape and flexibility for providing active protection from chemical exposure.

Selective, crosslinked chelating polymers are produced by substituting an acyclic chelating agent with a polymerizable functional group. The resulting substituted acyclic chelating agent is then complexed with the target metal ion. A crosslinkable monomer is then added and the complexed material is crosslinked. A new class of lubricants based on the general features of archaebacterial lipids but not limited to lipids solely extracted from archaebacteria is described. These lubricant/additive molecules have the following features: bipolarity, ether bonds and branched biphytanyl chains. They can be double chained or single chained. This new class has the potential to be highly thermally and chemically stable due to the above mentioned features.

Polymerizable lipids are used to encapsulate therapeutic agents and ferronetic particles into lipid vesicles. The vesicles are polymerized, injected into the body upstream of a targeted capillary bed, allowed to flow within the bloodstream to the targeted site, and held there by an externally applied magnetic field. The magnetic field is oscillated at sufficient periodicity to destabilize or disrupt the vesicle membrane thus effecting a controlled release of the therapeutic agent.
