Systems and methods for integrating analog voice service and derived POTS voice service in a DSL environment are provided. One embodiment is a system comprising: a first communication path for carrying plain old telephone service (POTS) voice signals between a telephone-type device and a subscriber line of a telephone network; a second communication path for carrying derived POTS voice signals between the telephone-type device and the subscriber line; and a switching mechanism configured to switch the telephone-type device between the first communication path and the second communication path.

Various embodiments are configured to transform characteristics of a communication signal. One embodiment is a method comprising decreasing amplitude of a first detected portion of the communication signal so that the decreased amplitude is in close proximity to a predefined specification; and increasing amplitude of a second portion of the communication signal so that the increased amplitude is in close proximity to the predefined specification, thereby resulting in a transformed communication signal.

Systems and methods are provided for providing communication between an ATM layer device and multiple multi-channel PHY layer devices, which increase the number of multi-channel PHY layer ports supported by the ATM layer device. In general, one such system comprises an ATM layer device that supports a plurality of ATM communication channels in which each of the plurality of ATM communications channels correspond to a first class of service or a second class of service, a plurality of physical layer devices each having a first channel port associated with the first class of service and a second channel port associated with the second class of service, and a local interface in communication with the ATM layer device and the plurality of physical layer devices for establishing a plurality of channel connections between each of the plurality of ATM communication channels and the first channel port and the second channel port in each of the plurality of physical layer devices, the local interface having a plurality of addresses. In the system, each of the plurality of channel connections associated with the plurality of second channel ports is via one of the plurality of addresses and at least two of the plurality of channel connections associated with the plurality of first channel ports is via no more than one of the plurality of addresses. In this manner, the system increases the number of physical layer devices communicating with the ATM layer.

Systems and methods for providing communication between an ATM layer device and multiple multi-channel physical layer devices

A subscriber line driver (SLD) is provided for the continuous and automatic transformation of the characteristics of a communication system signal so that the signal conforms to a power spectral distribution (PSD) standard. The signal is transformed by the SLD which may increase (amplify) portions of the signal to a predefined specification, decrease (attenuate) portions of the signal to a predefined specification, and/or frequency modulate or filter the transmit signal frequencies to fit within the communication channel frequency bandwidth as defined by a predefined frequency band. After modification by the SLD, the transformed communication signal is injected (transmitted) into a communication transmission line. An SLD device can be employed in a variety of communication systems such as a public telephony system, a private branch exchange (PBX), a coaxial cable system, a fiber optic system, a microwave system, a radio communication system or the like. In the preferred embodiment, the SLD device operates in connection with a telephony system local loop which is operated as a digital subscriber loop (DSL). The SLD has an infinite input impedance at all frequencies. Addition of a parallel resister can enable the design engineer to set the transmission system terminating impedance to any desired value. This SLD can also be implemented in connection with a telephony system central office (CO) or a PBX.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for reducing the number of bit errors that occur in xDSL data transmissions as a result of baseband ringing. It has been determined that the number of bit errors that occur in xDSL data transmissions as a result of baseband ringing can be reduced by lowering the data transmission rate to a predetermined rate while baseband ringing is occurring. The apparatus of the present invention detects when baseband ringing is occurring over a communication system and causes the data communication equipment (DCE) device located at the central office and the DCE located at the customer premises to begin communicating at a lower, predetermined transmission data rate. When a determination is made by the apparatus that the baseband ringing is no longer present, the apparatus causes the DCE located at the central office and the DCE located at the customer premises to begin communicating at the original data transmission rate. This temporary rate reduction results in an increased operating margin during, and slightly beyond, the time interval in which baseband ringing is occurring.

Method and apparatus for reducing transmission errors in digital subscriber line (DSL) communication systems

Apparatus and method for generating user warning signal during data transmission suspension or degradation, that allows an user to identify that parallel operation of plain old telephone system (POTS) and digital data communications equipment is either occurring or being attempted. More particularly, the user signal warning indicates the impact to the operation of a multiple channel data communications device as a result of the parallel operation with the POTS equipment. A multiple variable signal alerts the user to the parallel operation, the amount of degradation, the elapsed time of the degradation to data communications, and which user site is causing the degradation by the direction of the data traffic being impacted.
