An exhaust gas recirculation control system for internal combustion engines includes an intake pipe () for delivering combustion air to the individual combustion chambers, an exhaust pipe () for discharging the exhaust gases from the combustion chambers, an exhaust gas recirculation line () that connects the intake pipe () and the exhaust pipe (), and a mechanical injection pump () which is controlled by a control rod () is disclosed. An electrically controlled EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve) () is located in the exhaust gas recirculation line () in order to control the effective cross section of the exhaust gas recirculation line () while an electrical pick-off device () determines the position of the control rod () and then controls the EGR valve ().

A multiple piece piston is provided for a diesel internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber depression in the crown of the piston. In order to achieve a low rate of heat flow into the piston ring area and thus into the cylinder liner which surrounds the piston, a separate piston base or crown surrounding the combustion chamber depression is formed by a ring element made of a material having poor thermal conductivity, and the main body of the piston is made of a material with high thermal conductivity. The heat of combustion is thus conducted mainly axially through the piston main body and absorbed by sprayed cooling oil. The cooling oil, thus heated, can be utilized for heating purposes.

A device for regulating the delivery timing of injector pump elements is presented, whereby the injection pump elements are actuated by a camshaft of the internal combustion engine, said camshaft also being simultaneously employed to operate the intake and exhaust valves. All the cams are nonrotatably secured to the camshaft and the entire camshaft is rotatively adjusted relative to the crankshaft by a delivery timing regulator.

Starting aid for internal combustion engines according to which fuel is conveyed to a flame heater plug extending into the interior of an outwardly bulging section of the air intake manifold which bulging section is larger than the entire plug portion extending into the bulging section of the air intake. A perforated cover is interposed between the flame heater plug and the air intake manifold, and more specifically is located in the area where the bulging section of the air intake manifold bulges out from the latter.
