Production of paper sheets, boards and pulp molded articles from fibrids

Fibrids of polyolefins showing a high degree of fibrillation and a high specific surface area are obtained by flashing a pressurized solution or polyolefin in pentane or in a pentane-containing solvent by passing said solution through an orifice into a space which is at a lower pressure and in which shearing forces are applied to said solution. The fibrids directly obtained may be used, for example, for the manufacture of paper or for the manufacture of textile-like webs.

Manufacture of fibrids of polyolefins

Fibrids of polyolefins showing a high degree of fibrillation and a high specific surface area are obtained by flashing a pressurized solution of polyolefin in pentane or in a pentane-containing solvent mixture at a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent by passing said solution through an orifice into a space which is at a lower pressure and in which shearing forces are applied to said solution. The fibrids directly obtained may be used, for example, for the manufacture of paper or for the manufacture of textile-like webs.

A process for the manufacture of fibrids by dissolving, in a solvent, macromolecular waste materials from the bead polymerization of styrenes, and introducing the solution into a precipitation medium under the action of shearing forces to form fibrids.

Utilization of constituents of effluent from the manufacture of styrene

Aqueous suspensions of polyolefin fibrids are prepared. To avoid foam formation and improve fiber-bonding, small amounts of anionic agents are added to the suspensions. The suspensions are suitable for the manufacture of paper-like or textile-like web structures distinguished by very good fiber bonding and good initial wet strength.

Aqueous suspensions of polyolefin fibrids are prepared. To avoid foam formation and improve fiberbonding, small amounts of anionic agents are added to the suspensions.
