The invention relates to a device for hot dip coating metal strands (), particularly strip steel, in which the metal strand () can be vertically guided through a reservoir (), which accommodates the molten coating metal (), and though a guide channel () connected upstream therefrom. An electromagnetic inductor () is mounted in the area of the guide channel () and in order to retain the coating metal () inside the reservoir (), can induce induction currents in the coating metal () by means of an electromagnetic blocking field. While interacting with the electromagnetic blocking field, said induction currents exert an electromagnetic force. In order to prevent an intense heating of the metal strand caused by the electromagnetic inductor, the invention provides that the inductor () is connected to electric power supply means () that supply the inductor with an alternating current whose frequency (f) is less than 500 Hz. In particular, a mains frequency of 50 Hz is intended.

Device for hot dip coating metal strands

A process for stabilizing strip in a plant for coating strip material, in which a metal strip is taken through a container holding molten coating material that has, below the melt surface, a through channel, in which induction currents are induced by an electromagnetic travelling field in the coating material and, in interaction with the electromagnetic travelling field, generate an electromagnetic force to retain the coating material. In the region of the through channel, a controllable magnetic field superimposed on the modulation of the electromagnetic travelling field is applied, whose field strength and/or frequency are adjustable as a function of sensor-detected position of the strip in the coating channel.

A method is provided for lengthening the life of electric arc furnace linings in the production of steel from scrap, while at the same time introducing sponge iron pellets to shorten the melting time. This is achieved by predetermining the increase in power at the arc-molten bath interface upon introduction of the sponge iron and automatically reducing the power factor in the circuits feeding the electrodes according to the predetermination, upon each introduction of sponge iron.
