A method of loading bales of refuse from a horizontally acting baling press on to a transport vehicle without the use of a separate loading machine such as a fork-lift truck comprises aligning the transport vehicle with a discharge from the press; moving each bale as it is discharged from the press on to a transverse table; moving some of the bales laterally so that the bales are formed into two or more rows side by side aligned with the transport vehicle and moving the two rows of bales progressively forwards as successive bales are discharged from the press so that the rows are moved from the transverse table on to the vehicle and the rows are built up on the vehicle until the vehicle is fully loaded. The apparatus for carrying out this method comprises a discharge table arranged at the outlet of the press, a transverse table aligned with the discharge table and on the side of the discharge table remote from the press, the transverse table having a drive by which it is horizontally displaceable across the direction of discharge of the bales from the press and a longitudinally movable hauling tongs which is arranged to move single bales forwards from the discharge table on to the transverse table and then to move the two or more rows of bales which are assembled from the transverse table forwards on to the transport vehicle.

Apparatus for loading bales on to transport vehicles

Method of loading bales on to transport vehicles

A refuse bunker of the kind having a horizontal open-topped pressing box disposed beneath a filling hopper and a pressing plunger which is movable longitudinally in the pressing box to feed refuse through an outlet opening of the bunker and, in use, into a container, is provided with a closure which is situated on the outlet side of the outlet opening. The closure includes three passage openings for the passage of refuse from the outlet opening, the passage openings being disposed in two spaced-apart vertical planes. One passage opening, which is in a plane furthest from the outlet opening, is in a stationary member and is aligned with the outlet opening and the other two of the passage openings are vertically movable, are spaced apart one above the other, are of different heights from each other and are situated in a plane between the plane of the stationary opening and the plane of the outlet opening. The two vertically movable passage openings are preferably provided in a slider guided in a frame fixed to a wall of the bunker in which the outlet opening is provided and the frame forms the stationary member. By movement of the slider, either one of the vertically movable openings can be brought into an operative position in between the outlet opening and the stationary passage opening.

Closures of bunkers for holding refuse

In the disclosed method, garbage is first compacted into blocks which are then inserted into a container having a closable opening and a filling space of predetermined length and also having a predetermined permissible load capacity. Pursuant to the invention, weighed quantities of garbage are compacted into blocks of substantially the same density, whereby the length of the individual blocks is dependent on the nature of the garbage. The compacted blocks of substantially the same densities are inserted into the container until the insertion of an additional compacted block would exceed the permissible load capacity and/or the filling length of the container. In this manner, maximum use of the container space and its load capacity are made without overloading the container or creating hazards during the container's subsequent transportation to a disposal area. The container is closed after the last block has been inserted. The inventive method may be electronically controlled, for example, by computer.
