A continuous, chemical vapor deposition method for producing a coated glass article is disclosed. A glass substrate is advanced continuously, while hot, past first and second treating stations. A non-oxidizing atmosphere is maintained in the vicinity of the first treating station, while an oxidizing atmosphere is maintained in the vicinity of the second station. A non-oxidizing gas which contains a silane, e.g., SiH.sub.4, is directed from the first treating station against a surface of the glass to form a silicon coating on that surface. An oxidizing gas which includes a metal compound in the vapor phase is directed from the second station against the silicon-coated surface of the article. The process is controlled so that the silane-containing gas forms a reflective silicon coating on the glass surface, the oxidizing gas which includes a metal compound forms a coating of an oxide of the metal, and oxidation before the article reaches the second treating station forms a silicon oxide layer on the silicon which is of sufficient thickness that the metal oxide layer is substantially free of pinholing.

Continuous vapor deposition method for producing a coated glass article

A gas distributor beam includes a plenum and distribution slot surrounded by a generally V-shaped cooling fluid chamber. The circulation of a suitable cooling fluid tends to maintain the plenum and distribution slot at a temperature below four hundred degrees Fahrenheit for the distribution of diborane gas to an upper surface of a heated glass ribbon. Carbon blocks are utilized to stabilize the glass temperature above nine hundred fifty degrees Fahrenheit for the proper deposition of boron on the surface of the glass. Insulation between the carbon blocks and the outer walls of the cooling fluid chamber minimize heat transfer and the shape of the cooling chamber minimizes the exposure of the glass to the lower temperatures of the cooling chamber.

Apparatus for coating glass

The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for directing a constant velocity laminar flow of a fluid along a surface of a planar substrate. The apparatus comprises a plurality of serially arranged, individual passageways interconnecting an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is adapted to be connected to a supply of fluid, while the outlet is positioned adjacent the surface of the substrate for directing the uniform laminar flow of fluid onto the substrate surface. The individual passageways are adapted to vary the velocity of the fluid as it passes through the passageways to ensure that a laminar flow of constant velocity is produced along the surface of the substrate. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the apparatus is utilized to apply a metal oxide coating to a sheet of moving glass. In these instances, the outlet is an elongate nozzle extending transversely relative to the path of the moving glass to enable a gaseous reactant utilized to form the metal oxide coating to be applied across the entire width of the glass sheet. In one embodiment of the invention, the individual passageways are alternating converging and diverging passageways which function to evenly distribute the fluid within the passageways such that the fluid exits the elongate outlet at a relatively constant velocity to produce a uniform laminar flow of the gaseous reactant across the glass sheet.

Apparatus and method for producing a laminar flow of constant velocity

This application describes a method of treating glass sheets to be stacked, by applying water, a stain inhibiting material such as ammonium chloride, and dry particles of a mechanical separator such as wood flour, to such sheets in a plurality of sequential steps; together with articles resulting from that method.
