To facilitate assembly and provide for high-level output from a deceleration sensor which provides, inherently, only very low level output, an evaluation circuit, such as an amplifier structure, is connected immediately adjacent the deceleration sensor on a common metal plate, interconnected thereby by bonding wires, the common plate having connecting pins (18) passing therethrough for connection to a standard plug-and-socket connector; the evaluation circuit and the deceleration sensor are enclosed within a common sealed housing, so that both the deceleration sensor (12, 12') as well as the evaluation circuit (16, 17) are sealed against ambient influences, preferably retained within a high-viscosity fluid, such as insulating oil. All elements can be located on one side of the housing, in which a standard T5 transistor housing is suitable; or the deceleration sensor may be located on the other side of the metal plate (10) from the evaluation circuit, in which case a plastic housing can be used, only the deceleration sensor being secured to the metal plate by a metal housing cap, sealed to the metal plate.

Trigger system for a vehicular passenger restraint system

A fuel injector nozzle, particularly for internal combustion engines, comprises a nozzle holder, which contains a valve needle, which is biased by a spring toward a closed position against the pressure of the liquid that is to be injected. The fuel injector nozzle is provided with a needle lift sensor comprising a position detector, which is contained in the nozzle unit and responsive to the position of the valve needle and a movable shielding member, which cooperates with the position detector and is mounted on that end of the valve needle which is remote from the valve seat or on a spring seat secured to said end of the valve needle. In order to provide a fuel injector valve which has a simple and inexpensive structure and yet delivers reliable measurements and will resist the thermal and mechanical loads to which it is subjected during operation and to permit the use of inexpensive means for evaluating the signal delivered by the needle lift sensor, the latter comprises light transmitting means, which define a light path, the shielding member consists of an optical shutter that is movable across said light path, and two optical glass fiber lines for transmitting light to and from said light path are connected to opposite ends thereof.

The invention is directed to a circuit arrangement for the recording of false release signals for a restraint system such as an air bag system or a seat belt tensioning system in a vehicle. In this circuit arrangement, a release circuit including a first deceleration sensor and an evaluation circuit generates a release signal in the event of a deceleration caused by an accident. This release signal, however, becomes effective only if, at the same time, a second release circuit including a second deceleration sensor 17 responds, thereby triggering the restraint system. A monitoring circuit for monitoring the occurrence of a release signal without a concurrent response of the second release circuit will activate a warning device and inform the operator of the vehicle of the malfunction.

To reduce the number of connecting lines to the triggering circuit, the number of current lead-in terminals (20, 21) multiplied by the number of lead-off or return terminals (22, 23) from the firing circuits corresponds at least to the number of trigger restraint circuits (14-17) which are provided; and each of the trigger circuits (14-17) is connected to a different combination of current lead-in terminals (20, 21) and current lead-off terminals (22, 23), for example: 14: 21, 22; 15: 21, 23; 16: 20, 22; 17: 20, 23. The firing circuits can be tested by a simple test unit (FIG. 2) in which, sequentially, different connection patterns to the current lead-in and lead-off terminals are provided, and current flow checked under standard test voltage conditions.

Vehicle passenger restraint system

A sensor serves to detect acceleration, in particular for triggering passenger protection devices (air bags) in motor vehicles. A spring-restrained inertial mass subjected to the acceleration which is to be measured is deflected, and the deflection is detected with respect to a locally fixed reference point. Upon the exceeding of an acceleration threshold, a trigger signal is generated. A mass-restrained body has a first photoconductor, one end of which is acted upon by a light source. Depending upon whether it is in the state of rest or in a state of deflection dependent upon acceleration, the other end of the photoconductor is located opposite one of various photoconductors, which are connected to photo elements.

The rectified output voltage of the transformer of a d.c. to d.c. converter, as represented by a voltage divider output, is compared with a reference voltage in a voltage regulator (15), the output of which is compared in a comparator (29) with a sawtooth wave to produce a sequence of pulses the duration of which depends upon the output voltage of the regulator. These pulses are provided to the transformer through a driver circuit capable of operating at a very low input voltage. One flank of the square wave produced by a component of the sawtooth wave generator is differentiated by a capacitor (39) to provide transient pulses to the transformer to keep it operating in the event the input voltage to the converter exceeds the output voltage. Another comparator (59) is provided to shut down comparator operation when there is a short circuit at the output and also for a brief start-up interval during which capacitors are charged up.

An apparatus for supplementary fuel metering in the event of acceleration in an internal combustion engine, the apparatus developing signals by processing means indicative of a level of the increased quantity controllable in response to or in accordance with an operational status, operating characteristics and/or time for controlling an injection valve particularly in internal combustion engines which are driven in the lean range, the apparatus makes the increased quantity of fuel available for use to be dependent in the event of acceleration on the degree of leaning during the period before the acceleration process and dependent on the dimension of the desired acceleration itself. The apparatus for supplementary fuel metering includes a control apparatus for increased fuel quantities which is driven, for instance, in accordance with the output signals of an oxygen sensor and of a differentiating stage for the throttle valve angle.

A fuel control system for an internal combustion engine in which the accelerator pedal is set by the operator and defines an air flow control variable which is applied to a control loop that actuates a servo motor or other suitable rotary means to set the relative position of an air flow control flap within the induction tube. The control loop attempts to maintain the position of the air flow flap in continuous correspondence with the accelerator pedal position. The actuating current for the final control element is used as one input datum for a stored data field. Another input variable to the data field is the actual position of the air flow valve or flap. The data field contains empirically obtained data relating these two variables with the prevailing air flow rate and generates an output signal that is used as the air flow rate signal in a control pulse generator. The control pulse generator also receives other signals related, for example, to temperature, engine speed, etc. From this set of signals, the generator produces a fuel admission control signal, for example a fuel injection control pulse. The system includes special circuits for applying, for example, an engine idling correction signal to the control loop when the engine speed falls below a certain predetermined value.
