A rotation angle encoder apparatus is disclosed. The rotation angle encoder apparatus may comprise a plurality of light sources, a plurality of light detectors, and a plurality of pinions rotatable about a shaft. Each of the pinions may comprises a plurality of teeth and a plurality of gaps. The rotation angle encoder apparatus may comprise a plurality of stacked configurations such that, when the shaft is rotated, transmissivity may be measured to determine or calculate at least one measurement, such as an angle of rotation, position, movement, distance, or other discernable measurement. The rotation angle encoder apparatus with a plurality pinions and associated measurable transmissivities may enable an optical spectrum analyzer to increase wavelength accuracy and improve resolution in optical measurements.

Rotation angle encoder apparatus

A system for measuring linear and non-linear transmission perturbations in optical transmission systems is disclosed. The system may include a processor to help facilitate measurement of non-linear noise at an optical transceiver. The system, for example, may receive a reference correlation of a transmission of a channel of a fiber link, record an optical power spectrum of the channel, and determine a baud rate of the channel. The system may also apply a spectral correlation technique to the channel with a multiple baud rate distance in frequency domain. The system may also calculate a generalized optical signal-to-noise ratio (gOSNR) value based on the spectral correlation technique and the reference correlation. The system may also compare the gOSNR with wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) OSNR measurements to evaluate an amount of non-linear noise contributions.

Measuring linear and non-linear transmission perturbations in optical transmission systems

A method and apparatus is disclosed for measurement and monitoring of in-band optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). A two channel optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) is advantageously applied in acquiring wavelength division multiplex (WDM) signal data after it has been split according to polarization, then deriving the in-band OSNR from acquired data due to its narrow bandwidth, selective spectral shape, and capability to analyze two components of a polarized signal simultaneously. The in-band OSNR can be measured without interrupting optical transmission traffic in the network.

An optical spectrum analyzer of novel design, in which several different spectra can be measured and analyzed simultaneously. A measuring signal is used as a reference signal for calibrating the optical spectrum analyzer. The light rays are admitted via a coupling device with several coupling apertures arranged in a line; and via a separate decoupling device comprising respective decoupling apertures arranged in a line, the light rays are decoupled. Height offset is realized by a 90&deg; deviation prism. The arrangement makes possible simultaneous analysis of several optical lines with little retroreflection as well as uninterrupted calibration of the measuring process.

An optical reference signal with a gas sealed in a space, an optical fiber and a lens collecting the light beam exiting the optical fiber before the front end of the space and a photodetector at the back end of the space, which can be connected with an evaluation device. Such an optical reference element makes it possible to use cost-effective and readily available components to provide a reference signal for calibrating an optical spectrum analyzer, for example. The optical reference element is connected to the output of the optical device.
