A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric substrate adapted to receive an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the oxygen barrier. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier can be provided by the carrier web or incorporated into the cellulosic material, which is preferably box board.

Cellulose material containing barrier film structures

A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric core sandwiched between an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the polymeric core. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic acid, preferably sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier is a coating of polyvinylidene chloride, which also enhances the oxygen barrier of the polymeric film structure.

Oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier film structures

An improved oxygen barrier layer for coating a substrate, such as a polymeric film. The oxygen barrier is a layer of cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol and glyoxal, which exhibits improved barrier characteristics to the transmission of oxygen. The oxygen barrier is produced by coating a solution of polyvinyl alcohol, glyoxal and tensoactive agent onto at least one side of a substrate adapted for receipt of such solution. The polyvinyl alcohol is thereafter cross-linked in the absence of a catalyst to provide the oxygen barrier.

Cross-linked PVOH coatings having enhanced barrier characteristics

A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric substrate adapted to receive an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the oxygen barrier. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic acid, preferably sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier is a metallized polymeric composite, preferably metallized oriented polypropylene.
