A teleconference system including a plurality of personal presence cells positioned at a local communication site and at a remote communication site. The plurality of personal presence cells are characterized as either sensor cells or display cells. The sensor cells include at least one video camera positioned to sense and transmit an image of the local participant, and an image screen positioned to reflect an image of the local participant toward the at least one video camera and for viewing of an image through the screen. The display cells each include at least one projection display positioned to display a multi-dimensional image of a remote participant on a display screen. A transmission link interfaces the plurality of personal presence cells positioned at the local communication site and the plurality of presence cells positioned at the remote communication site.

An optical hinge (20) provides one or more free space optical communication links through the hinge (17) of an instrument (10). The optical links include a transmitter (24) in one section (14) of the instrument (10) and a receiver (34) in the other section (16) of the instrument (10). An optical coupler (27) connects the transmitter (24) to the receiver (34) through a hinge (17).

An inverted drive optical interconnect link including an optical transmitter module designed to change input bits of logical value one to output bits of logical value zero and vice-versa, an optical receiver module designed to change input bits of logical value zero to output bits of logical value one and vice-versa, and an optical waveguide connected to the transmitter module and to the receiver module so that electrical signals input to the transmitter module are faithfully reproduced at an electrical output of the receiver module.

Inverted drive design for VCSEL-based optical interconnects

Optical signal frequency conversion and mixing is accomplished by an optical device comprised of a photodetector, a non-linear device, passive circuitry, and a multiple quantum well structure. The photodetector converts a light signal into an electrical signal. The non-linear devices create harmonics of the electrical signal of which the passive circuitry selects a desired frequency of the harmonics. This selected frequency in turn modulates the multiple quantum well structure. A power bias is applied to the multiple quantum well structure which is then modulated by it to produce a modulated output light beam modulated at the selected frequency.
