An absorbent insert for use with an absorbent garment has a body-facing outer surface and a garment-facing outer surface. The garment-facing outer surface is at least partially permeable to fluids. The insert also includes one or more absorbent layers and one or more delay layer(s) adapted to substantially affect the flow of fluid through the insert.

Disclosed is an absorbent article useful for the following purposes without limitation: as a bed pad, a baby changing pad, a bib, a table cloth, or a painter's drop cloth. The absorbent article includes a vapor-permeable liquid-impermeable bottomsheet having an interior surface and an exterior surface, an absorbent structure positioned adjacent the interior surface, and a non-adhesive skid-resistant coating applied to the exterior surface such that the bottomsheet remains vapor-permeable after application of the coating. The non-adhesive skid resistant coating improves the ability of the absorbent article to remain in position without leaving residue on surfaces while leaving the absorbent article breathable.

The disclosure describes a commode liner made from a first and a second opposing member defining a top with an opening, a bottom, and a pair of opposing sides. The pair of opposing sides includes a separation distance D, which varies from the top to the bottom, and the distance D is larger at the top than at the bottom. The opposing members can be formed from a latently dispersible barrier composite material including an exposed low strength barrier component, an internal water sensitive layer, and a water permeable, inextensible, water dispersible support layer. When exposed to aqueous conditions on the barrier side, the composite prevents it from passing through to the other layers. When exposed to aqueous conditions on the opposite side, the commode liner readily disperses and may be disposed of by flushing in a toilet, for example. Examples of barrier layers include polylactic acid. Examples of water sensitive layers include polyvinyl alcohol. Examples of support layers include low stretch grades of toilet tissue.

A method for alleviating female urinary incontinence especially during episodes of increased intra-abdominal pressure is disclosed. The method includes the steps of providing a non-absorbent urinary incontinence device having an initial cross-sectional area, an insertion end and a trailing end. The urinary incontinence device also contains a compressed resilient member which is capable of increasing the cross-section area of the urinary incontinence device when expanded. The urinary incontinence device is inserted into a woman's vagina with the insertion end entering first. The vagina is a canal with an inner periphery made up of right and left lateral walls, an anterior wall and a posterior wall. The urinary incontinence device is inserted such that it contacts at least two of the walls. The urinary incontinence device is positioned in the middle third of the length of the vaginal canal with the insertion end aligned adjacent to a woman's urethral sphincter muscle. The urethral sphincter muscle is a part of the urethral tube. The urinary incontinence device cooperates with a woman's symphysis pubis to sandwich the urethral tube therebetween. The resilient member is allowed to expand within the vaginal canal such that at least a portion of the urinary incontinence device increases in cross-sectional area and contacts all four interior walls of the vaginal canal and provides a supportive backdrop for the urethral tube. The urethral tube is then permitted to be compressed upon itself between the urinary incontinence device and the symphysis pubis thereby limiting involuntary urine flow.

Method for alleviating female urinary incontinence

An absorbent article includes a garment shell and at least one liquid containment beam formed of an absorbent material. The liquid containment beam has an attachment edge bonded to the garment shell so that the containment beam can lie against the garment shell and also pivot about an axis defined by the attachment edge. For comfort during use, the containment beam desirably has a width to thickness ratio of at least about 3:1. In particular embodiments, the absorbent article includes pairs of inner and outer containment beams, with the inner containment beams adapted to lie against the garment shell and the outer containment beams adapted to lie against the inner containment beams.

A method of making an absorbent article includes providing a liquid containment beam having longitudinal ends and attachment and free edges that extend between the longitudinal ends. The attachment edge is bonded to an interior surface of the absorbent article and a bottom surface of the containment beam is adapted to lie against but be unadhered to the interior surface. The resulting containment beam can pivot about an axis defined by the attachment edge in response to lateral compression of the article, extension or contraction of elastic members, absorption of liquids, or a combination of these factors.

An absorbent article includes first and second liquid containment beams that are moveable relative to a moisture barrier. In particular embodiments, leakage barriers formed of a liquid impermeable material are bonded to the moveable containment beams to impede lateral movement of liquid. In other embodiments, the moisture barrier is formed of a breathable material and the leakage barriers are positioned between the containment beams and moisture barrier to minimize condensation on an exterior surface of the moisture barrier. Desiccant particles may also be included adjacent the moisture barrier to further minimize condensation.

An incontinence article is manufactured by providing a formable, liquid impermeable moisture barrier material, an absorbent assembly, and a liquid permeable liner material. At least the moisture barrier, and desirably a composite structure including the moisture barrier, absorbent assembly and liner, are heated to the softening point of the moisture barrier. The composite structure is conformed such as by vacuum forming to the shape of a mold surface. Afterward, a shaped structure is recovered wherein the liner is bonded to the moisture barrier with the absorbent assembly sandwiched therebetween. The shaped structure, which may also include a retaining member and a cover, is adapted to fit the male anatomy and address urine-specific incontinence. The shaped structure includes a central portion and an ungathered peripheral wall outward of the central portion. The peripheral wall has a height above the central portion of at least about 5 millimeters transversely outward from a target zone and at least about 25 millimeters transversely outward from a transition zone. The shaped structure desirably has a Resulting Length of from about 10 to about 25 centimeters, a Body Conforming Angle of less than about 130 degrees, and a Skew Angle of at least about 15 degrees.

Absorbent article including liquid containment beams and leakage barriers

Absorbent articles of the present invention are specifically adapted for the adult male anatomy. The articles include a moisture barrier having a length measured between front and back ends of less than about 46 centimeters. A liner is bonded to the moisture barrier sandwiching an absorbent assembly therebetween. The moisture barrier is gathered along each of its side edges between forward and rearward terminal points. The forward terminal points are spaced from the front end of the moisture barrier by at least about 7 centimeters, and the rearward terminal points spaced from the back end of the moisture barrier by less than about 5 centimeters. Elasticized containment flaps disposed on the liner extend longitudinally toward the front end to a position at least about 16 centimeters from the back end of the moisture barrier. The moisture barrier is also gathered along its back end. In particular embodiments, a retaining member is bonded to the liner and defines therebetween a compartment having a volume of at least about 25 cubic centimeters, and a cover formed of a liquid impermeable material is bonded to the liner.
