An method of, apparatus for, or storage device medium having instructions for publishing a first notification within a data processing system where the data processing system comprises a first source generating the first notification, a first destination device, and a second destination device. The source may be a storage unit, a printer, a processing unit, or any other device which is a component of the data processing system. The destination device is typically a monitor, a workstation, a computer, a PC, or other input/output type workstation. The method comprises of having the first destination device subscribe to receive notifications from the first source. In addition, the second destination device subscribes to receive the notifications serially republished from the first destination device. Upon the publication of a notification from the first source to the first destination device, the first destination device will publish the notification to the second destination device.

Notification method and apparatus in a data processing system

Provided are techniques for restoring firmware. A first programmable hardware device determines that a second programmable hardware device needs a valid firmware image, retrieves a copy of the valid firmware image from an external memory, and sends the valid firmware image to the second programmable hardware device via a private communication link, wherein the private communication link enables private communication between the first programmable hardware device and the second programmable hardware device. The second programmable hardware device restores existing firmware using the valid firmware image.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for autonomically virtualizing a data storage server. The apparatus, system, and method include a central control hub module configured to service storage server operations between a client and one or more storage servers, a detection module configured to determine whether a set of storage conditions is satisfied, and a creation module configured to create an additional instance of a storage server in response to the set of storage conditions being satisfied. The central control hub module may also include a mapping module configured to maintain storage mappings between the client and servers and provide the storage mappings to the client. When a new server instance is created, it may include a new maintenance database instance.

Apparatus, system, and method for the autonomic virtualization of a data storage server

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for validating logical volume configuration. A determination module makes a determination of a type of a host operating system of a host computer requesting access to a logical volume. A characterization module characterizes the host type of the logical volume. A compatibility module determines if the logical volume is configured for the host operating system. A mitigation module mitigates the mis-configuration if the logical volume is not configured for the host operating system.

A data processing system provides a method and apparatus for managing a shared resource between multiple processors. The data processing system includes a first processor for producing, or supplying, available sections of the shared resource, and a second processor for consuming, or allocating, the available sections within the system. The first and second processor share a memory containing a circular queue, a resource queue, for referencing available shared resource sections. The resource queue is initialized by storing a pointer to an available shared resource section in each entry of the resource queue. The second processor consumes an available section of shared resource by removing a resource pointer from a resource queue entry and sending a message signal to a mailbox message subsystem of the first processor. The first processor produces an additional section of available shared resource by servicing the resource message signal and adding a pointer to the additional shared resource section in an empty resource queue entry.

Managing a shared resource in a multi-processor system

A mailbox message system is coupled between a processor having a mailbox and one or more peripheral devices or circuits communicating information to the processor. The mailbox message system in the present invention reports events which occur in the peripheral devices or circuits to the mailbox within the processor to be serviced by the processor. The mailbox message system receives inputs from the processor indicating which events are allowed to be currently serviced by the processor and stores these inputs in a first memory. The mailbox message system further receives unique signals representing distinct events from the peripheral devices and stores these signals in a second memory. The generated events which are pending service in the second memory are then compared with the allowed events in the first memory. When a match exists, a message is encoded and transmitted to the mailbox of the processor indicating that the processor has an event to be serviced. The processor then must service all the pending events in the second memory.
