A method for selecting color value on a digital image, initializing a color modification tool to the selected color value, and then modifying the color value. After selecting a color modification tool such as a contrast LUT, a user selects a region on a digital image containing the color value to be modified. The selected region is highlighted, and a knot corresponding to the selected color value is automatically placed on the input/output LUT graph of the color modification tool. A slide bar, and a graphic readout providing the &ldquo;before&rdquo; and &ldquo;after&rdquo; values of the selected color value, are superimposed directly on the digital image adjacent the highlighted region. The user can then modify the selected color value by displacing the slide bar. The digital image, graphic readout, and the input/output LUT graph of the modification tool are updated in response to the manipulation of the slide bar, allowing the user to immediately visualize the affect of the color change on the digital image.

Method for modifying a digital image

A detail area of a low resolution preview scan is selected to determine the quality of a subsequent high resolution scan. A detail window containing high resolution image data corresponding to the selected detail area is displayed as soon as it becomes available during the high resolution scan. Based on the quality of the high resolution image data displayed within the detail window, the scanning operator can prematurely terminate the high resolution scan of the image prior to completion.

Method and apparatus for scanning original images

Image processing parameters for gradation correction of a digital image from a scene, which includes specular reflections may be seriously influenced by the presence of those specular reflections. Therefore, a method is developed to detect the presence of specular reflections in a scene, to modify the exposure time of the photo-sensitive means, which converts a luminous image to electronic image signals and to apply a gradation correction to the image data thus acquired. In one embodiment a digital camera is used to capture the image data, a cumulative histogram is built and two characteristic cumulative frequencies are used to determine via the histogram specular densities and highlight densities. The relative position of these density values indicates whether specular reflections are present, and give suitable parameters for setting an optimal exposure time and for computing a gradation correction curve.

Detection of and correction for specular reflections in digital image

A method is described for selective color correction of an original color image. In one embodiment, a color is selected by picking a colored pixel from the color image and a changed color, having a restricted color change, is associated with the selected color. All original colors, situated within a local color gamut, comprising the selected color, undergo a color modification according to the color change. The effect of the modification decreases as the original color reaches the boundary of the local color gamut. The selected color and changed color may be defined in the native color space, the local color gamut is preferentially defined by an action radius related to a psychometric color space. Two or more selective color corrections may be combined by a weighted mean modification, by choosing for each color change a weight value, which decreases as the selected color is more different from the original color.
