A universal transmit-receive (UTR) module for phased array systems comprises an antenna element shared for both transmitting and receiving; a transmit path that includes a transmit-path phase shifter, a driver, a switch-mode power amplifier (SMPA) that is configured to be driven by the driver, and a dynamic power supply (DPS) that generates and supplies a DPS voltage to the power supply port of the SMPA; and a receive path that includes a TX/RX switch that determines whether the receive path is electrically connected to or electrically isolated from the antenna element, a bandpass filter (BPF) that aligns with the intended receive frequency and serves to suppress reflected transmit signals and reverse signals, an adjustable-gain low-noise amplifier (LNA), and a receive-path phase shifter. The UTR module is specially designed for operation in phased array systems. The versatility and wideband agility of the UTR module allows a single phased array system to be designed that can be used for multiple purposes, such as, for example, both radar and communications applications.

Universal transmit/receive module for radar and communications

A multi-stage radio frequency power amplifier (RFPA) includes an output stage SMPA and a driver stage SMPA. As the multi-stage RFPA operates, the magnitude of an RF switch drive signal generated by the driver stage SMPA is dynamically minimized based on I-V characteristic curves of the output stage SMPA's power transistor and the output stage SMPA's dynamically changing load line. By constraining the magnitude of the RF switch drive signal as the multi-stage RFPA operates, VGS feedthrough of the RF switch drive signal is minimized, to the extent possible. Amplitude distortion and phase distortion in the RF output that might occur due to unconstrained VGS feedthrough, particularly at low output RF power levels, are therefore avoided. Operating all stages of the multi-stage RFPA in switch mode also results in high energy efficiency and an output RF spectrum with very low wideband noise (WBN).

Low wideband noise multi-stage switch-mode power amplifier

A switch-mode RFPA driver includes first and second field-effect transistors (FETs) arranged in a totem-pole-like configuration. The switch-mode RFPA driver operates to generate a switch-mode RFPA drive signal having a generally square-wave-like waveform from an input RF signal having a generally sinusoidal-like waveform. To maximize high-frequency operation and avoid distorting the switch-mode RFPA drive signal, the switch-mode RFPA driver is designed so that its output can be connected directly to the input of the switch-mode RFPA to be driven, i.e., without using or requiring the use of an AC coupling capacitor. The first and second FETs of the switch-mode RFPA driver are designed and configured to limit and control the upper and lower magnitude levels of the switch-mode RFPA drive signal to levels suitable for switching the switch-mode RFPA directly, obviating any need for DC biasing at the input of the switch-mode RFPA.

Limiting driver for switch-mode power amplifier

A phased array transmitter includes a plurality of vector modulators, an in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) signal generator, and a multiphase generator. The output phases of the plurality of vector modulators, and hence the direction of transmission of the phased array transmitter, are set and controlled by adjusting both the magnitude ratios of I/Q signal pairs generated by the I/Q signal generator and applied to I and Q inputs of the plurality of vector modulators and phases of a plurality of local oscillator (LO) signal phases generated by the multiphase generator and applied to LO inputs of the plurality of vector modulators. Setting and controlling the output phases of the vector modulators by varying both the magnitude ratios of the I/Q signal pairs and the phases of the LO signal phases allows the output phases of the plurality of vector modulators to be more precisely set and controlled than if the output phases were to be set and controlled only through the LO paths or only through the I/Q signal paths of the plurality of vector modulators.

Phased array transmission methods and apparatus

A solid-state lighting system includes a light-emitting device connected in series with a variable dim setting resistor, an adjustable regulator, and a current sensor disposed in a feedback loop between an adjust input of the adjustable regulator and the variable dim setting resistor. The voltage dropped across the variable dim setting resistor is forced to remain constant irrespective of the resistance setting of the dim setting resistor. The current sensor measures or senses the current flowing through the variable dim setting resistor and causes the adjustable regulator to adjust its output voltage and the forward voltage drop across the light-emitting device so that the current flowing through the light-emitting device matches the current set by the variable dim setting resistor. Controlling the current in this manner allows dimming to be performed over an extremely wide dimming range, to very low light levels, and without producing light flicker at any dim level.

High-efficiency, wide dynamic range dimming for solid-state lighting

A radio frequency power amplifier (RF PA) apparatus includes a first RF PA, a second RF PA, and a controller. The first RF PA is configured to deliver RF power to a load over a first range of RF power levels. The second RF PA is configured to deliver RF power to the load over a second range of RF power levels greater than the first range of RF power levels. The controller controls whether the first RF PA is delivering RF power to the load or the second RF PA is delivering RF power to the load, and is further configured to coordinate and control handoffs between the first and second RF PAs by varying magnitudes of input RF voltages applied to the RF input ports of the first and second RF PAs or by varying magnitudes of input bias voltages applied to the RF input ports of the first and second RF PAs.

Highly linear, highly efficient wideband RF power amplifier having wide video bandwidth capability

An AC/DC power conversion apparatus comprises an AC/DC converter for converting AC power to DC power for a load and a controller that maintains a power factor of the load as the load varies. The AC/DC converter includes an inductor and a plurality of switches that alternately connects and disconnects the inductor to and from an AC power source, to generate the DC power for the load. The plurality of switches is controlled by a plurality of switch drive signals generated by the controller, based on comparisons of an AC voltage from the AC power source to a DC output voltage produced by the AC/DC converter. To maintain the power factor of the load, the controller is configured to adjust the frequency of the plurality of switch drive signals in response to variations in the load while holding the duty cycles of the switch drive signals constant.

AC/DC power conversion methods and apparatus

A solid-state lighting system comprises a plurality of light-emitting devices (e.g., light-emitting diodes) and an alternating current to direct current (AC-DC) converter that converts AC power to DC power for powering the plurality of light-emitting devices. The AC-DC converter is configured to perform AC-DC conversion directly, without the need for or use of a bridge rectifier or step-down transformer. According to one aspect of the invention, the light-emitting devices of the solid-state lighting system are autonomous and individually powered by a plurality of DC power supplies generated from the DC power produced by the AC-DC converter. According to another aspect, a plurality of phase-offset dimmer control signals are generated based on waveform distortions in a dimming signal produced by a conventional dimmer switch. The phase-offset dimmer control signals are used to individually control the dimming of the light-emitting devices.

Power conversion and control systems and methods for solid-state lighting

A DC-DC converter for delivering electrical power to a load includes an output filter having an inductor and an output capacitor, a first switch, and a second switch. The first switch is configured to alternately couple and decouple the inductor to and from a DC input voltage as power is being delivered to the load. The second switch is configured to electrically disconnect the output capacitor when the load is removed or deactivated. Disconnecting the output capacitor allows the DC-DC converter to rapidly transition from an operating state to a disabled state, obviating any need to discharge the output capacitor in order to fully disable the DC-DC converter. Residual energy stored in the electric field of the output capacitor and/or the magnetic field of the inductor at the time the load is next reactivated is available to hasten transition back to the operating state.

Rapid-transition DC-DC converter

Radio frequency (RF) transmitters and methods of their operation are disclosed. An exemplary RF transmitter includes an RF power amplifier (RFPA), a dynamic power supply (DPS), and a baseband processing unit. The baseband processing unit generates an amplitude modulation (AM) signal that the DPS follows to generate a DPS voltage V(t). The DPS voltage V(t) serves as a power supply for an output stage of the RFPA. Under most operating conditions the output stage is configured to operate in a compressed mode (C-mode), but is reconfigured to operate in a product mode (or 'P-mode) during times low-magnitude events in the AM signal are conveyed to the DPS and become present in the DPS voltage V(t) produced by the DPS. Operating the output stage in P-mode overcomes the inability of C-mode operation to reproduce low-magnitude events contained in the AM signal at the RF output of the RFPA.

Polar modulation using product mode

A solid-state lighting system includes a light-emitting device (LED) driver, an LED or plurality of LEDs, a transistor connected in series with the LED or plurality of LEDs, and a current source connected in parallel with the transistor. The LED driver generates a drive signal, which controls the transistor and current flowing through the LED or plurality of LEDs and the transistor. The drive signal is generated in response to a dim control signal, which determines the dim setting of the LED or plurality of LEDs. The current source serves to maintain at least a minimum current through the LED or plurality of LEDs at all times, even when the transistor is turned OFF or is in a high resistance state, thereby preventing large supply voltages from dropping across the transistor and protecting the transistor from undesirably breaking down or being damaged or destroyed.
