A first multimode optical fiber carries a mode division multiplexed (MDM) optical signal. The MDM optical signal is transmitted into a second multimode fiber from the first multimode optical fiber. The first and second multimode fibers are coupled via a fiber connector. The lateral offset between the two fibers at the connector is less than 2 &#x3bc;m.

Fiber connectors for mode division multiplexing using multimode optical fibers

An O-band optical communication system includes a transmitter, a receiver, and an optical fiber system coupled between the transmitter and the receiver. The optical fiber system includes at least a first fiber segment, with a positive dispersion-wavelength gradient and a first zero dispersion wavelength, coupled in series to a second fiber segment, with a negative dispersion-wavelength gradient and a second zero dispersion wavelength. When an optical signal propagating along the first fiber segment has a wavelength shorter than the first zero dispersion wavelength and experiences negative dispersion, at least partial positive dispersion compensation is provided by propagation along the second fiber segment. When light of the optical signal propagating along the first fiber segment has a wavelength longer than the first zero dispersion wavelength and experiences positive dispersion, at least partial negative dispersion compensation is provided by propagation along the second fiber segment.

The output profile of light from a multimode optical fiber is determined using a geometrical optics approach where the rays launched into the fiber conform to LP-modes of the fiber. This output profile can then be employed as an input to a second fiber to calculate the transmission losses of a coupler that introduces various coupling inaccuracies, such as lateral offset, axial offset, and angular offset.

A method of characterizing a multimode optical fiber results in a measure of estimated modal bandwidth (EMB) that is independent of the bandwidth of the light used in the characterization. The method includes propagating pulses of light along the multimode optical fiber at prescribed radial positions relative to an optical axis of the multimode optical fiber and detecting output pulses from the multimode optical fiber corresponding to the pulses of light propagated along the multimode optical fiber at the prescribed radial positions relative to the optical axis of the multimode optical fiber. An estimated modal bandwidth of the multimode optical fiber is calculated in a manner that accounts for chromatic dispersion of the multimode optical fiber.

Method of differential mode delay measurement accounting for chromatic dispersion

A fiber optic lane changer includes a first and a second connector. A plurality of lane changer transmission paths include first ends received within the first connector and second ends received within the second connector. The first ends are arranged in respective ones of a first subset of a plurality of optical interface positions in a standardized connector configuration, and the second ends are arranged in respective ones of a second subset of the plurality of positions. In certain embodiments, the plurality of lane changer transmission paths have first ends that are aligned to optically couple with respective ones of the eight outermost optical transmission paths of the first connector. At least one of the lane changer transmission paths may have a second end that is aligned to optically couple with one of the four innermost optical transmission paths of the second connector.

Fiber optic lane changers for use with fiber optic cables having unused optical fibers and related methods

An MPO connector includes a pin configuration with an elongated shaft extending along an axis A. A first portion proximate a first end of the shaft includes a tool surface feature for engagement by a tool to impart a rotation to the shaft. A second portion proximate a second end of the shaft is cylindrical and centered on an axis B, offset relative to the axis A. A method of minimizing insertion loss between mating channels of mated MPO connectors includes inserting light into a channel of a first MPO connector, then measuring an intensity of light output from a channel of a second MPO, mated to the first MPO connector. A pin associated with one of the mated MPO connectors is rotated to a point where the measured light output from the channel of the second MPO connector is approximately maximized.
