A reciprocating shaft assembly in a reciprocating saw moves in a reciprocal motion and drives a saw blade via a blade holder. At least one bore is formed in an end of the reciprocating shaft assembly opposite the blade holder. A pin fixed to the saw passes through the bore and acts as a bearing to support the reciprocating shaft assembly in its reciprocating motion.

A battery release mechanism for releasably securing a battery to a power tool is disclosed. The battery release mechanism includes a battery receiving portion integral with a handle portion of the power tool and an attachment portion integral with the battery. The attachment portion is configured to engage the battery receiving portion. The battery release mechanism also includes a closure member that is operable with and transversely disposed within the battery receiving portion. The closure member is configured to secure the battery within the battery receiving portion when the closure member is in a 'lock' position. The closure member has a first end and a second end opposite the first end. The first end is disposed through a side wall of the tool housing and defines a push button for selectively moving the closure member from the 'lock' position to a &#x201c;release&#x201d; position. When the closure member is in the &#x201c;release&#x201d; position, the battery can be removed from the power tool. A method of releasably securing a battery to a power tool is also disclosed.

A counterweight in a reciprocating saw counterbalances a reciprocating shaft assembly adapted to hold a saw blade. The counterweight is supported for reciprocating motion by slides which ride within slots formed in a housing adapted to hold the reciprocating mechanism.

A plate joiner including a fence support, a drive, and a fence system. The fence support includes a cutter and a contact surface, which defines a cutter slot. The cutter is arranged and configured to protrude from fence support through cutter slot to make a plunge cut into a surface of a workpiece when the contact surface is pressed against the surface and the cutter is plunged into the workpiece by pushing on a rearward handle portion of the tool. The drive is arranged and configured to rotatably drive the cutter through a motor. A preferred fence system includes an angle adjustment system arranged and configured to position the fence at a wide range of fence angles and, at any selected distance from a top face of the workpiece to the fence, the distance from the top face of the workpiece to the cutter remains constant as the front fence angle is adjusted. A preferred fence system includes a trunnion which pivotally couples the front fence to the fence system. A preferred fence system also includes an angle segment member, which has two slots used to position the fence in two ranges of fence angles.

A reciprocating power tool includes a motor operatively connected with a drive assembly for driving a reciprocating shaft, on which a working tool is supported. The reciprocating power tool includes a base so that the tool may stand upright when resting upon the base without the use of external supports. A counterweight positioned inside of the drive housing minimizes vibration. The motor is preferably positioned so that its rotational axis is angled with respect to a longitudinal axis of the reciprocating shaft. This configuration of the motor produces a compact configuration for a reciprocating power tool and helps the tool stand upright upon the base of the tool. A battery may be provided in a cordless embodiment and is advantageously positioned for balancing the tool.

Reciprocating saw having compact configuration and independent stability

A pad sander skirt which flares out over the periphery of the sanding pad and which is coupled to a lower housing so that it swivels about the body of the sander. The skirt and lower housing can be selectively swivelled in a rotational manner to a position desired by the user. A further sander improvement disclosed relates to the protection of a user's hand. Palm-grip random orbit sanders are sometimes configured so that the sanding pad may begin spinning at high speed when the sander is lifted off of the work. To this end, the present application discloses a protective skirt which flares out over the periphery of the pad in a palm-grip random orbit sander. Also disclosed is an improved dust collection system comprising a filter housing formed of a rigid porous material for entrapping dust.

Plate joiner fence angle adjustment system

An arrangement of frictional gripping zones on the handle of a power tool is disclosed. The power tool has a main body portion and a handle portion depending from the main body portion. The handle portion includes a first side region, a second side region opposite the first side region, a rear region connecting the first and second side regions along a rear of the handle portion, and a front region connecting the first and second side regions along a front of the handle portion. A plurality of alternating first and second gripping zones extend longitudinally along each of the first and second side regions of the handle portion. The first gripping zones are made the first gripping zones being made from a first material and the second gripping zones are made from a second material different from the first material. Preferably, the material of the second gripping zones have a hardness greater than the material of the first gripping zones. Furthermore, a third gripping zone is made from the second material and extends longitudinally along substantially the entire front and rear regions of the tool handle. The first gripping zones are preferably sized and configured to correspond to the contour of the power tool handle to provide the user with an efficient frictional gripping when operating the power tool.
