Stable dispersion of alkylated polyvinylpyrrolidone and vinyl pyrrolidone

This invention relates to the reaction products of butyrolactone and an aliphatic amine utilizable as a chain extender and curing agent for castable polyurethanes and to the process employing said products in preparing castable polyurethane elastomers and to the process for preparing the butyrolactone amine adducts. The aliphatic amine reactants employed in preparing the butyrolactoneamine adducts are defined by the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is amino (--NH.sub.2) or hydroxy (--OH); R is hydrogen (--H) or methyl (--CH.sub.3) and n has a value of 1 to 2, which amines are reacted with butyrolactone in a mole ratio of between about 1:1 and about 1:3 to provide a curing agent having superior mechanical properties and having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, R' is a hydroxy group or ##STR3## and n has a value of 1 or 2.

Alcohol substituted amides as chain extenders for polyurethanes

This invention describes an ionizing radiation sensitive material having high contrast, high sensitivity and comprised of a mixed half-ester or half amide of the reaction of an N-hydroxy or N-aminoalkyl amide and a hydroxy alkyl terminally unsaturated compound with an alkylvinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer. A typical material is made by reacting hydroxyethyl pyrrolidone and hydroxyethyl acrylate with octadecylvinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer.

Polymer thickeners having a viscosity of at least 10 K, employed in acid media are stabilized with Redox indicators having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, such as, for example, methylene blue, phenosafranine, pyronine Y, tartrazine, amaranth, methyl orange, an alkali metal salt of diphenylamine sulfonate and malachite green oxalate, which stabilizers are combined with the polymer in a concentration of between about 0.005 to about 1 weight %.

The process for increasing the molecular weight of poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone over that normally obtained by suspension polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone in a saturated hydrocarbon suspension medium, by adding to the suspension medium a controlled amount of water, specifically an amount between about 1% and 35% by weight based on the total weight of N-vinylpyrrolidone monomer. The significantly higher molecular weight of the resulting polymeric product can be still further increased by additionally incorporating in the suspension medium between about 0.001 mol % and about 1 mol % of a difunctional vinyl cross-linking agent per mol of N-vinylpyrrolidone monomer. The polymeric products of the present invention are preferably water soluble granules having a porous structure; although the present invention also concerns the poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone having a number average molecular weight of between 400,000 and 2,000,000, preferably between 450,000 and 1,500,000 in any physical form.

Process for increasing molecular weight of vinylpyrrolidone polymer

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided herein an in situ process for making stable PVP-iodine complex having a high level of iodine power. The process of this invention is carried out by adding a predetermined amount of free water to a PVP suspension, and admixing iodine therewith to form the desired solid complex. The PVP suspension may be obtained by suspension polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) in a suitable solvent, and used directly for succeeding steps of the process.

A system for sustained release of phenolic material into a fluid from phenolic complexes of water-insoluble, but water-swellable crosslinked N-vinyllactam or N-alkyl-N-vinylamide polymers in the form of porous beads or granules. The complexes, which are particularly suited for use in situations wherein fluids containing phenolic materials in limited quantities are desired, and are provided by leaching a limited amount of phenolic material from the complex by contacting the porous granules in a container, such as in a canister or column which is used to treat liquids or water.

A composition of matter which is useful as a flocculant for aqueous dispersions containing suspended solid particles and as a filler retention aid in paper-making, consisting essentially of quaternized cationic vinyllactam-acrylamide copolymer containing the following recurring units in a random distribution: ##STR1## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl and ethyl; R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are selected from the group consisting of alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, hydroxyalkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and together may represent the residue of a cyclic secondary amine, e.g., morpholine; R.sub.4 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or benzyl radicals (10-100%) and hydrogen (0-90%); and X represents an anion such as chloride, bromide, sulfate, methyl sulfonate, etc.; and Z is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and the group ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are as defined above; n is a positive integer of from 1 to 3; a represents a range of 30 to 95% by weight of the lactam moiety in said copolymer; b represents a range of 5 to 70% by weight of the acrylamide moiety in said copolymer; and the relative viscosity of said copolymer is from about 5 to about 50 as measured using 1 gram of copolymer in solution in 100 ml. of water at 25.degree. C., and the process of making and using same.

Process for preparation of quaternized cationic vinyllactam-acrylamide

N-lower alkyl lactam solvent is recovered from a solution of polymer such as PVC residue in such solvent by adding to the solution a plasticizer for the polymer and then recovering the lactam from the solution by distillation. The plasticizer has a boiling point of at least about 25.degree. C above the boiling point of the lactam solvent. A stabilizer for the polymer may also be used.

Metal complexes of 8-hydroxyquinoline and polymeric water-insoluble but water-swellable cross-linked N-vinyllactam or N-alkyl-N-vinylamide polymers in the form of porous beads or granules and a process for preparing same. Such complexes are particularly suited for use as algicides, fungicides, slimicides, and bacteriocides in the treatment of water such as in gravity filtration systems, canisters or packed columns having the advantage of rapid throughput. The complexes may be prepared by adsorbing the hydroxyquinoline onto the cross-linked N-vinyllactam or N-alkyl-N-vinylamide in the form of porous beads or porous granules and subsequently forming the metallic complex in solution.
