A projectile is propelled from the gun when a valve that controls the gas storage chamber of the gun is momentarily unseated, thereby admitting a short burst or charge of gas into the space immediately behind the projectile. The barrel that confines and controls the projectile during its movement out of the gun is itself driven rearwardly by spring action to accomplish unseating of the valve through an actuating stem at the rear of the barrel, and during such rearward movement of the barrel, the projectile is carried therewith so as to reduce the volume of the space behind the projectile in which the gas may expand before acting upon the projectile. After a predetermined amount of rearward movement, the projectile is released to thereby prevent interference with its propulsion from the gun, and return movement of the barrel forwardly after valve actuation is terminated short of its fully forward position, thereby minimizing the increase in the gas expansion space created by movement of the barrel and stem forwardly during firing. Stopping such forward movement in this way also positively precludes any opportunity for the barrel and actuating stem to oscillate in a rebounding manner between the spring that drives the barrel rearwardly and the spring controlling the valve, such activity otherwise causing a series of gas discharges after the projectile has already left the gun.

Projectile propulsion and control in a gas-powered gun

A clip and indexing mechanism for a gas-operated gun which affords the visible inspection and incremental advancement and insertion of projectiles from the clip into the chamber of the gun. The clip is formed with a long narrow rectangular web across which are positioned parallel spaced cylindrical cavities, each containing a projectile and each cavity being individually sealed by a mechanically rupturable seal. The gun includes an indexing mechanism for indexing the clip but reciprocation of the breech block to withdraw a bolt or obturator from the clip, index the clip and then force the next projectile through the seal and into the bore also cocks the hammer and further reciprocation before firing the projectile then in the barrel does not operate the indexing mechanism. Releasing the hammer resets the indexing mechanism to index the clip. The breech block is reciprocated after firing, and this motion cocks the hammer and operates a lever to reciprocate a pawl and index the clip through an opening in the housing extending transversely of the barrel. The clip is formed of a translucent polymeric material permitting the visible inspection of the color of the projectiles therein. The gun has a high pressure gas valve with two chambers and two outlet valves leading to different barrels for firing different projectiles.

Clip and indexing mechanism for a gas-operated gun

A clip for use with a gas-operated gun to package and supply to the gun hygienic projectiles for inoculating animals with a particular biologically active material. The clip contains a molded structure having a plurality of axially aligned adjacent cylindrical chambers receiving the implant projectile and each chamber is sealed by a rupturable sealing film at each end thereof. Indexing recesses are provided on said structure and associated with each of the chambers for indexing the clip in the gun to dispose seriatim the chambers in alignment with the bore of the gun.

There is herein disclosed an air gun having a breech block assembly, including a plurality of mating molded plastic members defining a guideway for a pivotally mounted projectile transfer member, movable during cocking of the gun from a firing position holding a projectile in alignment with the gun barrel to a loading position to receive another projectile and back to the firing position, with sealing means being provided to effect sealing engagement between the projectile transfer member and the molded plastic members of the breech block assembly in the firing position whereat the projectile is transferred from the projectile transfer member to a firing chamber provided in one of the molded plastic members by air pressure at the beginning of a firing cycle and held in the firing chamber in sealing engagement therewithin during an intermediate portion of the firing cycle and then discharged from the firing chamber through the gun barrel upon application of predetermined high pressure air toward the end of the firing cycle.
