An electrochemical cell having a cold worked, complexly configurated and subsequently annealed cover over an open end of the cell housing, the cell cover incorporating a compression ring of high yield strength in radially outwardly compressive engagement with the inner face of a rim of the cover to compress the rim against a seal between the rim and the cell housing.

A non-resealable vent closure for a galvanic cell, such as a nonaqueous cell, which comprises a seal member force-fitted with a bushing having an upper portion terminating with a thinner walled lower portion and wherein said seal member is force-fitted within the lower portion of the bushing and the bushing is seated within and seals the vent orifice in the housing of the cell.

An electrochemical cell is provided, which has a conductive housing that contains an active anode material and an active cathode material. The active cathode material is electrically isolated from the housing and the active anode material is electrically connected to the housing, thus making the housing the negative electrode terminal of the cell. The cell includes an electrically conductive pin member having a first portion that protrudes from the cell through an orifice in the cell housing and a second portion that is electrically connected to the active cathode material to make the pin member the positive electrode terminal of the cell. An electrically insulating member is disposed between the pin member and the wall of the orifice. The cell electrolyte comprises a metal perchlorate salt dissolved in a nonaqueous liquid.

An electrochemical cell having a cell housing that contains an active anode material and an active cathode material. An electrically conductive current collector member within the cell housing is in electrical contact with one of the active materials, and an electrically conductive pin member having a first portion protrudes from the cell through an orifice in the cell housing. A sealing member is disposed in the the orifice between the pin member and the cell housing to seal the interior of the cell from its surroundings. A second portion of the electrically conductive pin member is both releasably secured within an aperture in the current collector member and in electrical contact with the current collector member, so that when the pressure within the cell exceeds a predetermined pressure limit, the pin member is ejected from the cell and the excessive internal pressure is then vented.

A hermetically sealed electrochemical cell system of the Li/MnO.sub.2, Li/SO.sub.2, Li/C.sub.2 F or Li/CF.sub.x type having its lithium anode electronically connected to the cell housing thereby rendering the housing the anodic terminal of the cell. A terminal pin extends into the housing and is electronically insulated therefrom by a glass-to-metal hermetic seal. All metal components of the cell electronically connected to the cathode including the terminal pin and cathode collector are made of a non-ferrous metal such as molybdenum to decrease the deposition of a conductive corrosive material on the glass-to-metal seal and resulting corrosion of the seal, thereby increasing the shelf life of the cell.

An hermetically sealed galvanic cell having a safety vent assembly comprising a housing having a portion which is inwardly depressed and flexible, which portion surrounds an aperture. The aperture is filled with a layer of glass or ceramic material thus producing an hermetically sealed cell which exhibits increased mechanical strength coupled with reliable venting.
