A two component type polyurethane adhesive is provided for fiberglass reinforced plastics which requires no cleaning, preparation or treatment of the surface, and the like. The curative component is a nitrogen-free liquid polyether or polyester in an amount such that in association with a urethane prepolymer component containing free NCO groups, the ratio of the free NCO groups in the prepolymer component to the OH groups in said curative component is at least 1.2 and desirably at least 1.35. Such high NCO/OH ratios have unexpectedly been found to provide good adhesion and especially good humidity adhesion and peel strength adhesion to fiberglass reinforced plastics or metal surfaces which are free from any surface treatment.

Polyurethane adhesive for a surface treatment-free fiber reinforced plastic

Coating compositions are disclosed which use a polyoxetane polymer having CH.sub.2 --O---CH.sub.2 --R.sub.f side chains where R.sub.f is a highly fluorinated alkyl or polyether. The coating compositions use polyisocyanates to create isocyanate terminated polymers from the poly(oxetanes) and from various polyols from alkylene oxides or polyester polyols. These can be reacted together to form block copolymer structures or can be linked together when the coating is crosslinked. A preferred method is to use blocked isocyanate groups. Another preferred embodiment is to use the composition as a abrasion resistant coating for glass run channels.

Abrasion-resistant and low friction coating compositions

This invention relates to a method of sealing the porous surfaces that can be generated during the manufacturing and processing of molded plastic parts. Liquid thermoset coatings are applied to preheated parts and cured to create a barrier on the surface to gasses generated during heat curing of subsequently applied surface coatings. The liquid coating may be comprised of polyurethane forming components; those components in combination with unsaturated polyester resins; vinyl ester resin compositions; coatings derived from hydroxyl or carboxyl containing oligomers reacted with alkylated urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, and/or benzoquanamine-formaldehyde resins; and oligomers containing carboxyls reacted with triglycidyl isocyanurate.

Liquid thermoset sealers and sealing process for molded plastics

A primerless, one-part, heat curable, low volatile organic compound, polyurethane composition comprises a blocked polyurethane prepolymer made from a liquid hydroxyl terminated intermediate and an excess of a polyisocyanate, a curing agent, silicone and/or low friction polymer and optional fillers. Upon cure of the polyurethane composition, the silicone oil and/or low friction polymer generally imparts low friction and high abrasive resistant properties. A desired use is as a glass run channel coating.

Low VOC, primerless, polyurethane compositions

A one-part, solvent free in-mold coating composition exhibiting good hardness, good crack resistance, and good adhesion to fiber reinforced plastic substrates includes a blend of a urethane polyacrylate compound having three or more (meth)acrylate groups, a urethane diacrylate or urethane divinyl compound, one or more adhesion promoters, and one or more ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers.

In-mold coating composition

A urethane coating composition is disclosed which uses fluorinated monohydric alcohols to increase abrasion resistance. One specific use of the coating is on vehicle sealing systems which use elastomeric substrates. The coating composition was found to have dramatically improved abrasion resistance in glass run channel applications over similar coatings without the fluorinated component.

Hydroxy-terminated telechelic rubber polymers and block copolymers of flexible polymers with unsaturated polyester resins improve the elongation and flexural elongation of in-mold coating compositions for fiber reinforced plastics (FRP). An FRP in-mold coating composition based upon vinyl ester resin, ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and at least one of telechelic hydroxy terminated flexible polymers and the block copolymers of functionally terminated flexible polymers with unsaturated polyester polymers are described.

In-mold coating with improved toughness

ABA block copolymers having saturated polyester midblocks 'B' and unsaturated polyester condensation end blocks A of molecular weight from about 100 to 500 or 600 are described which increase the flexural strain to failure of unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester resins. These ABA block copolymers are generally compatible with unsaturated polyester resins and increase flexural strain by a different mechanism than used by incompatible rubbery polymers. These ABA block copolymers are compatible with the unsaturated polyester compositions and do not phase separate.

Low VOC, primerless, polyurethane compostions

This invention relates to a thermosetting unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester resin compositions modified with AB or ABA block copolymers. The A blocks are unsaturated polyester while the B blocks are flexible poller having a Tg of 0.degree. C. or lower. The blocks are generally separately prepared having a variety of terminal groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, or isocyanate groups, but low molecular weight A blocks can be prepared in situ on the B blocks, The functionality of the blocks can be controlled to get AB or ABA diblocks and polyblocks, These modified unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester resin compositions have higher flexural strain to failure and are generally tougher than standard resins without modification. Control of the reaction conditions and the functionality of the blocks prior to coupling minimizes the formation of A(BA).sub.n where n is an integer above 1.

Unsaturated polyester-modified flexible polymers for use in molding

A block copolymer of generally an AB, ABA, or A(BA).sub.n structure, or mixtures thereof where the A block is an unsaturated polyester, the B block is a flexible polymer having a Tg of 0.degree. C. or lower, and n is 2 to 5. The various block components are generally first separately prepared as polymers with the flexible polymer generally having 1 or 2 functional end groups such as an amine group, a carboxyl group, or a hydroxyl group with the later being preferred. Alternatively, for low molecular weight unsaturated polyester blocks, the block can be made in situ. The preferred reaction route is to react a mono or dihydroxy terminated flexible polymer with a diisocyanate which subsequently can be readily reacted with the polyester. The block copolymers can be utilized as toughening agents. They furthermore can be utilized to coat a fiber structure such as individual fibers, a woven structure, or a nonwoven structure such as mats, rovings, bundles, and the like, with the coated fiber structures subsequently incorporated into a polymeric matrix such as polyester.

Polyester-flexible polymer block copolymers and mixtures thereof

Vinyl-terminated polyesters and vinyl-terminated aliphatic polycarbonates are described which improve the flexibility and elongation at failure of cured samples of unsaturated polyesters or vinyl ester resins both at room temperature and at high temperatures, and without significant loss of surface quality or other mechanical properties. Further, these polymers do not phase separate from uncured polyester resin/styrene solutions, do not significantly increase the initial viscosity of molding compositions in which they have been incorporated, and do not negate the effect of low shrinkage additives during cure.

A two-component polyurethane composition has good shelf stability and the adhesive made by curing the same has good high temperature stability and no adhesion loss after high temperture bake. The base or prepolymer component containing a primary hydroxyl intermediate also has a sufficiently large excess of free isocyanate so that the ratio of free NCO groups in the prepolymer component to OH curative groups plus any amine groups in the curative component is generally from about 1.2 to about 2.0. The curative component contains a trimerization catalyst so that upon cure, isocyanurate units are produced. The system also contains molecular sieves, as well as phosphorous-type adhesion promoters.
