Polyester resins are formed by the reaction of alcohols having a hydroxyl functionality of at least one and an allyloxy functionality of at least one, provided the total hydroxyl and allyloxy functionalities are at least three, with saturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides. The polyester resins are combined with vinyl monomers to form low temperature cure coating compositions.

Low temperature curing polyester resins and coating compositions

Curable aliphatic polyester resin compositions formed from aliphatic unsaturated polycarboxylic acids and polyols and a crosslinking aliphatic vinyl monomer are disclosed. The degree of unsaturation in the polyesters is carefully controlled so that the resin can be cured to produce strong thermoset products. Resins of this nature can be filled with high levels of aluminum hydrate to give compositions that have high oxygen indices and very low smoke densities as measured by the National Bureau of Standards Smoke Chamber. Also, the resins are capable of room temperature curing.

Low smoke density fire-retardant resins

A novel method of preparing a strong, non-glossy material comprises subjecting a composition comprising an unsaturated polyester, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a peroxide catalyst to actinic light to cure. In the preferred embodiment, the material comprises pigments and accelerators for room temperature cure of polyester resins. The materials are useful as films and coatings.

Method of forming a non-glossy film

Laminated articles of at least one sheet of relatively rigid, transparent material, e.g., glass, and polyesterurethane sheet are described. Such laminates, e.g., a bilayer assembly of one glass sheet with an adhered sheet of polyesterurethane or a trilayer assembly of two glass sheets with an interlayer of polyesterurethane sheet, are useful in safety glass applications, e.g., automobile windshields, and automobile side and rear windows. The polyesterurethane is preferably the reaction product of a cycloaliphatic diisocyanate and a relatively low molecular weight hydroxy-terminated aliphatic polyester, e.g., the esterification product of an aliphatic dibasic acid and an aliphatic diol.

Impact-resistant glass-polyesterurethane laminates

A novel method of preparing a strong, non-glossy pigmented material comprises subjecting a composition comprising an ethylenically unsaturated polyester, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a peroxide catalyst to at least enough actinic light to gel the composition and coating the hardened polyester composition with a coating composition comprising an ethylenically unsaturated polyester, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, ultraviolet light absorbing pigment, and optionally an accelerator, and subjecting the coating to actinic light to cure the coating to a non-glossy pigmented material.
