A technique that is usable with a well includes changing the temperature of a local environment of a distributed temperature sensor, which is deployed in a region of the well and using the sensor to acquire measurements of a temperature versus depth profile. The region contains at least two different well fluid layers, and the technique includes determining the depth of a boundary of at least one of the well fluid layers based at least in part on a response of the temperature versus depth profile to the changing of the temperature.

To measure a characteristic of a multimode optical fiber, a light pulse source produces a light pulse for transmission into the multimode optical fiber. A spatial filter passes a portion of Brillouin backscattered light from the multimode optical fiber that is responsive to the light pulse. Optical detection equipment detects the portion of the Brillouin backscattered light passed by the spatial filter.

Measuring a characteristic of a multimode optical fiber

An optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) system is configured to detect Rayleigh backscatter reflected from a multimode sensing optical fiber. The system includes a single spatial mode filtering system to select a single speckle of the Rayleigh backscatter produced in response to an optical pulse launched into the multimode fiber. The detected single speckle may be used for distributed disturbance (vibration) detection.

Distributed vibration sensing system using multimode fiber

A technique that is usable with a well includes disposing a distributed temperature sensor in a conduit that traverses a region of the well. The region contains at least two different well fluid layers. The technique includes circulating a fluid through the conduit and using the distributed temperature sensor to observe at least one temperature versus depth profile of the fluid. Based on the observation, the depth of a boundary of at least one of the well fluid layers is determined.
