A systemto detect aircraft ground proximity including: a transmitterfor transmitting a radio frequency signal along an extended landing gearof an aircraft, a sensorconfigured to detect a parameter of the radio frequency, and a controllerconfigured to detect a change in the detected parameter on the basis of an output of the sensor, and to issue a landing signal when the change in the detected parameter meets a predetermined criterion. The predetermined criterion is indicative of a certain aircraft ground proximity.

Aircraft landing

An aircraft fuel tank system including a fuel tank compartment for containing liquid fuel and having a float-activated valve arranged to become positively buoyant when immersed in liquid fuel so that the float moves up to a raised position which causes the valve to close and prevent liquid fuel from flowing out of the fuel tank compartment through the valve. The float is also arranged to move down to a lowered position in response to a level of the liquid fuel in the fuel tank compartment dropping, the movement of the float to the lowered position causing the valve to open and permit liquid fuel to flow out of the fuel tank compartment through the valve. A pressure-activated valve may be used as an alternative to the float-activated valve.

Aircraft fuel system

A pipe installation including conductive first and second pipes installed in a fuel tank; and a fitting which connects the first and second pipes and enables fluid to flow through the pipes via a conduit in the fitting. The fitting is attached to the first or second pipe by a flexible joint which permits relative movement between the fitting and the first or second pipe. The fitting is attached to a structure of the fuel tank. The fitting provides a path of least electrical resistance between the first or second pipe and the structure, and the path of least electrical resistance has a resistance between 50&#x3a9; and 100M&#x3a9;.

Pipe installation

A method is provided of inerting one or more fuel tanks of an aircraft. The method comprises: providing a temperature value indicative of a temperature at the aircraft's destination; comparing said temperature value with a predetermined value; and on the basis of said comparison, controlling the provision of inerting gas to the one or more aircraft fuel tanks. An aircraft fuel tank vent opening having a liquid separation nozzle, the liquid separation nozzle and the opening dimensioned such that migration across the liquid separation nozzle to the underside of a wing, of fuel escaping from the vent opening, is inhibited during normal operating conditions.
