An optical cable assembly comprising: (a) a plurality of fibers; (b) a connector; (c) at least a first flat ribbonized portion comprising at least a first portion of the plurality of fibers, the first flat ribbonized portion being terminated to the connector; and (d) at least a first non-flat portion comprising at least a second portion of the plurality of fibers.

A method of preparing an overmolded optical fiber assembly comprising: (a) placing at least one flexible optical circuit in a bottom mold, said bottom mold defining a bottom overmold cavity having a bottom surface, said at least one flexible optical circuit having a substrate and a plurality of fibers adhered to said substrate, said substrate being disposed within said bottom overmold cavity to define a first space between said substrate and said bottom surface; (b) flowing a polymer in at least said first space; (c) placing a top mold over said substrate, said top mold defining a top overmold cavity and a top surface and a port defined in said top surface to access said top overmold cavity, said substrate defining a second space between said top surface and said substrate; (d) flowing a polymer in at least a portion of said second space; and (e) removing said bottom and top molds to release said overmolded optical circuit.

Overmolded optical circuits

A connector for attachment to a planar surface, said connector comprising a shell housing configured for attachment to said planar surface, an insert housing connected to said shell and defining two or more insert ferrule openings, at least one retainer attached to said insert housing and defining two or more retainer ferrule openings aligned with said insert ferrule openings, and two or more ferrule assemblies disposed within said two or more insert ferrule openings.

Modularized insert assembly for backplane connector

A flexible optical circuit comprising: (a) a flexible substrate defining a perimeter; (b) an adhesive layer on at least a portion of said substrate; (c) a plurality of fibers laid out on said adhesive layer, wherein each end of each fiber of said plurality of fibers extends from said perimeter to define a plurality of fiber extensions, wherein at least a portion of said fiber extensions are discrete, single-fiber extensions; and (d) protective coatings around at least a portion of each of said fiber extensions, said protective coatings extending inwardly from said perimeter to provide strain relief for said each of said fiber extensions.

Flexible optical circuit with integrated fiber breakout

A cable assembly comprising: (a) a ribbon cable having a plurality of optical fibers having endfaces; (b) an elastomeric sheathing being disposed over at least a portion of the ribbon cable and terminating in a sheathing end near the endfaces such that the endfaces protrude beyond the sheathing end; (c) a ferrule having an mating surface presenting the endfaces, and a rear end having a rear opening through which the optical fibers pass, the rear end contacting the sheathing end to form an adhesive tight seal sufficient to prevent liquid adhesive in the ferrule from flowing out of the rear opening; and (d) adhesive disposed in the ferrule to secure the optical fibers to the ferrule.

Sheathed optical ribbon cable assembly

A connector includes a shell having a mating end configured to be mated with a mating connector and that holds at least one contact. A coupling mechanism is rotatable about the shell. The coupling mechanism includes an inner coupling nut and an outer coupling nut separate from the inner coupling nut. The inner coupling nut has threads configured to be threadably coupled to a mating connector. The inner coupling nut has a track defined by track walls formed into an outer surface of the inner coupling nut. The outer coupling nut has a cavity receiving the inner coupling nut. The outer coupling nut has a post extending into the cavity and being received in the track. The post engages the track walls and is released from the track wall into the track when the connector is fully mated to the mating connector.

Connector having coupling mechanism

A connector includes a shell and a coupling mechanism rotatable about the shell. The coupling mechanism includes inner and outer coupling nuts. The inner coupling nut has threads configured to be threadably coupled to a mating connector. The outer coupling nut is configured to be locked to the inner coupling nut to transfer rotation of the outer coupling nut to the inner coupling nut. The outer coupling nut is configured to be unlocked from the inner coupling nut to allow free rotation of the outer coupling nut relative to the inner coupling nut. The outer coupling nut is automatically unlocked when the connector is fully mated to the mating connector. The coupling mechanism may include a plunger movable between a locked position and an unlocked position with the plunger locking the outer coupling nut to the inner coupling nut in the locked position.

A terminus assembly is provided for terminating an optical cable that includes a plastic optical fiber (POF) having a tip segment that includes a tip surface. The terminus assembly includes a shell that includes a cable passage. The cable passage is configured to receive at least a portion of a length of the optical cable therein such that the tip segment of the POF extends within the cable passage. A POF stub is held by the shell. The POF stub extends a length from a mating end to a fiber end. The mating end of the POF stub is configured to optically couple with a mating POF of a mating connector. The fiber end of the POF stub includes a coupling surface. The POF stub is held by the shell such that the fiber end extends within the cable passage of the shell. The coupling surface of the fiber end is configured to be aligned with the tip surface of the POF within the cable passage of the shell such that the POF stub is optically coupled to the POF. The POF stub serves as a forward stop for the POF of the optical cable.

Terminus assembly for terminating an optical cable

A connector includes a shell and a coupling mechanism rotatably coupled thereto. The coupling mechanism includes an inner coupling nut and an outer coupling nut separate from the inner coupling nut. The inner coupling nut has internal threads configured to be threadably coupled to a mating connector. The inner coupling nut has a plurality of ramped steps disposed at different circumferential positions along the rear. The outer coupling nut has a detent successively engaging the ramped steps as the outer coupling nut is rotated in a tightening direction. The detent is released from the corresponding ramped step when the connector is fully mated to the mating connector. The detent engages a corresponding ramped step as the outer coupling nut is rotated in an untightening direction causing the inner coupling nut to rotate in the untightening direction.

An electrical contact assembly is provided. The assembly includes a contact hood having a body including an axis and an opening extending through the body along the axis. The opening has an inner surface. The contact hood is configured to be received in an opening of a connector housing. At least two protrusions are formed on the inner surface of the contact hood opening. An electrical contact is provided having a body including a contact end and a socket end. The socket end is inserted axially into the opening of the contact hood. The contact end of the electrical contact is configured to extend from a mating end of the connector housing. At least two apertures are formed on the socket end of the electrical contact. The at least two protrusions are received in the at least two apertures to secure the electrical contact within the contact hood.

Contact assembly for an electrical connector

A layered optical circuit including a multi-substrate optical circuit. The multi-substrate optical circuit includes a plurality of optical fibers, a first substrate supporting a first portion the optical fibers to form a first optical subcircuit, and a second substrate supporting a second portion of the optical fibers to form a second optical subcircuit. A third portion of the optical fibers between the first and second portions extends between the first and second substrates. Free fibers in the third portion are elongated to permit repositioning of the first and second optical subcircuits in an overlapping arrangement without exceeding a minimum bend radius of each of the optical fibers. The overlapping arrangement of the first and second optical subcircuits forms a layered optical circuit. Accordingly, a layered optical circuit having a large number of fibers and/or a complex circuit pattern may be affixed on a relatively small footprint of a backplane, etc.
