An HVAC system including an evaporator, a condenser, an expansion valve, and a compressor. An HVAC case includes a first heat exchanger having a first height, a second heat exchanger having a second height that is greater than the first height, and an air mix door movable to direct airflow from the second heat exchanger to the first heat exchanger or around the first heat exchanger. In a maximum hot mode, a valve system directs the coolant through the condenser, the first heat exchanger, and the second heat exchanger, and the air mix door directs airflow from the second heat exchanger to the first heat exchanger. In a maximum cold mode, the valve system directs the coolant through the evaporator, the first heat exchanger, and the second heat exchanger.

HVAC system

A secondary loop HVAC system including an evaporator, a condenser, an expansion valve, and a compressor. A refrigerant loop is in fluid communication with each of the evaporator, the condenser, and the expansion valve. An HVAC case includes a first heat exchanger and a second heat exchanger. A first coolant loop is in fluid communication with the first heat exchanger, the second heat exchanger, and either the evaporator or the condenser. A valve system is configured to control flow of the coolant through the first coolant loop. In a maximum hot heating mode, the valve system is configured to direct the coolant through the condenser, the first heat exchanger, and the second heat exchanger. In a maximum cold cooling mode, the valve system is configured to direct the coolant through the evaporator, the first heat exchanger, and the second heat exchanger.

A temperature control system for an engine. The system includes a thermal storage expansion tank defining a thermally insulated interior volume for storing engine coolant. The system further includes a pump that pumps engine coolant that has exited the thermal storage expansion tank back into the thermally insulated interior volume of the thermal storage expansion tank and forces air out of the thermal storage expansion tank to store coolant in the thermally insulated interior volume when the engine is off.

An exhaust heat recovery system. The system includes a heat exchanger configured to transfer heat from engine exhaust to a heat transfer fluid. A reservoir is in fluid communication with the heat exchanger. A pump is configured to pump the heat transfer fluid out of the heat exchanger and into the reservoir, and in doing so displace air out of the reservoir to the heat exchanger, when temperature of the heat transfer fluid exceeds a predetermined temperature.

Systems and methods for exhaust heat recovery and heat storage

A heat exchanger can include a core, a first tank, and a set of guide members. The core can include a first end member, a second end member, and a plurality of tubes that can extend longitudinally between the first and second end members. The first tank can be fixedly coupled to the first end member. The first tank and first end member can define a first chamber that can be in fluid communication with a first port of the first tank and a first end of the tubes. The set of guide members can be coupled to the first end member. The set of guide members can cooperate to define a plurality of first funnels. A narrow end of each first funnel can be open to an individual one of the tubes. A wide end of each first funnel can be open to the first chamber.

A chamber for absorbing condensate formed in a charge-air-cooler of a turbocharged engine system. The chamber may include desiccant to absorb the moisture. The chamber may also include a valve that is controlled by the vehicle control module to open to allow airflow to pass by the desiccant and absorb the moisture from the desiccant or to place in a closed position to allow the desiccant to absorb the condensate formed in the charge-air-cooler.

A heat exchanger includes a plurality of tubes extending between two tank bodies. At least one tank body includes a crown portion. At least one groove is formed in the crown portion. In order to avoid the creation of a thinner wall section in the crown portion, the inner and outer surfaces that form the groove are offset from each other.

The present teachings provide for a wire harness mounting assembly including a first retention member, a first guide member, a second retention member, and a second guide member. The first retention member and the first guide member are each configured to be spaced apart from the second retention member and the second guide member to suspend a wire harness across a space defined therebetween.

An apparatus to rotate a cooling fan may employ an engine coolant radiator having a radiator inlet tank attached at an end of the radiator. The radiator inlet tank may be filled with engine coolant and transfer heat into a fan system evaporator contained inside the radiator inlet tank. The tank may contain a liquid working fluid capable of absorbing heat from the engine coolant and becoming a gaseous working fluid. A gas expander with an impeller may be employed to receive the gaseous working fluid from the fan system evaporator and impart rotation in a shaft to which the impeller of the gas expander and cooling fan is attached. A fan system condenser may receive the gaseous working fluid from the gas expander and condense the gaseous working fluid to form a liquid working fluid. A pump pumps the liquid working fluid back to the fan system evaporator.

An apparatus for controlling airflow to and a temperature of an engine may employ a radiator with liquid coolant, a first roller positioned parallel to an inlet tank and a second roller positioned parallel to an outlet tank, and a single film shutter that winds upon each roller. Thin strip leaders define gaps for airflow to reach the radiator. A method of controlling an open position of the film shutter may entail calculating a first film shutter open position based upon an engine coolant temperature, calculating a second film shutter open position based upon an air conditioning output pressure, comparing the first film shutter open position to the second film shutter open position, determining the larger open position, and moving the film shutter to the larger open position to expose a greater radiator surface area than the smaller open position.

A system for separating and dispersing condensate formed in a charge air cooler of a turbocharged engine system. The system includes a drain tube on the charge air cooler lower surface that is plumbed to a reservoir, with a charge air recirculation tube plumbed from the reservoir to the turbocharger compressor inlet duct. The pressure difference between the charge air cooler and the compressor inlet draws any condensate formed in the charge air cooler back into the reservoir. A valve at the bottom of the condensate reservoir will open under predetermined vehicle operating conditions to drain the stored condensate out from the reservoir. The condensate could be simply drained to the ground, or a spray bar could be connected to the reservoir outlet to spay the condensate on to the outside surface of the charge air cooler, providing additional performance for brief periods of high engine load operation.

A dual-rate resilient isolator having a plurality of raised, generally conical bumps formed on an engagement surface thereof. The bumps in combination with a main body of the resilient isolator provide a dual-rate for isolating CRFM noise vibration and or other vibrations (via the relatively softer resiliency of the bumps) and isolating road vibration and shock (via the relatively harder resiliency of the main body) even though the bumps and the main body are composed of the same resilient material.

A combined viscous heater and viscous coupling fan drive operates on principles of viscous coupling to provide both, supplemental vehicle interior cabin heating, and rotation to a cooling fan mounted to a fan shaft. A viscous drive chamber and case surround a drive plate and a viscously driven plate. A liquid coolant chamber and case surrounds the viscous drive case that houses the plates for viscous coupling. Liquid coolant passes through the liquid coolant chamber as coolant circulates through the engine block. The coolant chamber has a coolant inlet and outlet. An electromagnetic clutch engages to turn a shaft and the driving plate which viscously couples to and turns the driven plate, which is connected to a shaft and engine cooling fan. The electromagnetic clutch and a fan brake are controlled to govern viscous heat generation by the plates and cooling fan operation.
