Methods and apparatuses for enabling or disabling MTC mode operations for a plurality of CPE devices in a MAC domain are provided. A system operator can control enabling MTC mode operations for certain CPE devices capable of MTC mode operations in a MAC domain by setting a control attribute in a CMTS enabled for MTC mode operations for the MAC domain.

Particular embodiments provide systems and methods to reduce the average power consumption per subscriber. Particular embodiments select windows of time when network components are under-utilized by subscribers of the network. During periods of under-utilization of a network component, subscribers may be consolidated onto a smaller number of network components by increasing the service group size. The consolidation increases the service group size, which has the effect of lowering bandwidth per subscriber. However, the bandwidth use per subscriber may be lower during this time. The use of the smaller number of network components allows the energy for these components to be used more efficiently. When the subscriber network demands increase, the distribution system places the network components into an active power state and redistributes the subscribers to the newly-activated components. This decreases the service group size, such as back to the original size.

Power efficiency improvement in network equipment using service group consolidation

Methods, systems, and apparatuses operate to adjust transmission power of a customer premise equipment device using a transmit channel set parameter. Power characteristics associated with a received signal from a customer premise equipment device can be identified, and a determination is made whether to adjust a transmission power associated with transmission of the signal. Based upon the determination, an adjustment can be made to the transmission power using a transmit channel set parameter, thereby adjusting the channels used by the customer premise equipment device to transmit the signal.

Adjusting transmission power in customer premise equipment

A cable network facilitates communication between a CMTS and cable modems over a plurality of channels. The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) protocol access system for load balancing in a cable network transmits a change request directing movement of a cable modem to a different channel. The change request indicates an initialization technique for the cable modem to perform once synchronized to the different channel(s). If the cable modem is not successfully initialized on the different channel or channel set, the CMTS is configured to iteratively transmit subsequent retry requests. The subsequent retry requests may indicate an initialization technique based on a list of initialization techniques.

Choice of initialization technique for load balancing attempts

Methods and apparatuses for balancing a network load are provided. A control attribute that allows a system operator to prioritize upstream and downstream channel loading conditions relative to each other for load balancing decisions is used to balance the network load.

In various implementations, a converter can be used to convert a classification list to a state machine operable to be executed by the deterministic finite automata module. In some implementations, the converter can be used to produce a state machine from template data, the state machine being operable to be executed by the deterministic finite automata module.
