Embodiments include a load calculator, a workload analyzer, and a decision module. The load calculator generates an input/output (IO) record for an asset. The IO record includes a count of read operations and write operations corresponding to the asset from each of a plurality of sites. The workload analyzer collects the IO record and generates at least one of a write threshold and a read threshold. The decision module generates a request for at least one of a promotion and a copy of the asset in response to a determination that an operation has reached at least one of the write threshold and the read threshold for the asset.

Computer software that adjusts a performance capability of a storage volume by (i) determining a current storage volume to store data having a workload pattern, wherein a cycle of the workload pattern includes a hot period and a cold period, (ii) determining a time limit window of the current storage volume, wherein the time limit window is a shortest time window within which performance capability of the current storage volume is to be kept without adjustment, (iii) determining a low performance period of the current storage volume corresponding to the cold period, and (iv) in response to the low performance period being greater than or equal to the time limit window, reducing the performance capability of the current storage volume during the low performance period.

The system includes a data synchronization module and a heat data module. The data synchronization module is configured to communicate with a first storage volume and a second storage volume to provide a backup for the first storage volume by synchronizing information from the first storage volume to the second storage volume. This disclosure provides a method, a computing system and a computer program product for managing storage capacity usage in a storage system. For each of a plurality of logical storage arrays in the storage system, a Remaining Time Buffer (RTB) measure indicating time to use up respective free space currently available to the logical storage array is calculated. Respective free space currently available to each of one or more of the plurality of logical storage arrays is adjusted, so that the RTB measures of the one or more logical storage arrays satisfy a threshold.

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to data management in a multitier storage system (MSS), the MSS comprises a storage virtualization controller (SVC) having at least one storage pool, and the storage pool comprises at least one logic volume, and the at least one logic volume comprises at least one tier. In response to the completion of a data migration from a source physical space of a first tier to a destination physical space of a second tier in a logic volume of a first storage pool, it is determined there is a free physical space in the source physical space. In response to the result of the determination indicating there exists a free physical space and the source physical space being thin provisioned, the free physical space of the source physical space is released to the storage array by the SVC.

Data management in a multitier storage system

Performing failover processing between a production host and a backup host, a storage system is connected to the production host and the backup host. In response to a failure of the production host, metadata is obtained of data blocks that have been cached from an elastic space located in a fast disk of the storage system. A storage capacity of the elastic space is expanded. Data blocks are obtained to which the metadata corresponds according to the metadata and the storage capacity of the expanded elastic space, and storing the same in the expanded elastic space. In response the backup host requesting the data blocks to which the metadata corresponds, and the data blocks to which the metadata corresponds have already been stored in the expanded elastic space, data blocks are obtained to which the metadata corresponds from the expanded elastic space and transmitting the same to the backup host.

The system includes a plurality of storage volumes, a data synchronization module, a space-efficient storage module, and a heat data module. A second storage volume of the plurality of storage volumes includes a backup storage location for a first storage volume. The data synchronization module, coupled to the first storage volume and the second storage volume, provides a backup by synchronizing information from the first storage volume to the second storage volume during a synchronization event. The information includes data chunks, heat map data, and first metadata. The space-efficient storage module receives the information from the data synchronization module and allocates the information to the second storage volume in accordance with a space-efficient storage model. The heat data module reads the first metadata and the heat map data and adjusts a location of the data chunks in the second storage volume based on the heat map data.
