A system for transmitting data over a MIMO channel has a transmitter and a receiver. In the transmitter, the input data is encoded over at least two pipes by a concatenation of at least two constituent signal-space encoders. Each constituent encoder is used to generate, in response to the input data, a sequence of symbols from a channel alphabet having at least one dimension. Each symbol of the channel alphabet includes at least one complex symbol having real and imaginary coordinates. The transmitter interleaves the coordinates of the sequence of channel alphabet symbols, and transmits (from at least two transmit antennas) the interleaved coordinates. Preferably, each constituent encoder maximizes a minimum coordinate-wise Hamming distance between members of all valid pairs of symbol sequences, maximizes a minimum Euclidean distance between members of all valid pairs of different codewords, and obeys an equal eigenvalue criterion.

Apparatus using concatenations of signal-space codes for jointly encoding across multiple transmit antennas, and employing coordinate interleaving

In a wireless MIMO communication system for N symbols of a frame of information, allocating Nsymbols to a stronger eigen sub-channel and Nsymbols to a weaker eigen sub-channel, where N&#x3e;N; determining a probability of reception error when transmitting the Nsymbols through the weaker eigen sub-channel for an auxiliary signal-to-noise ratio; solving for a quality of service QoS of the weaker eigen sub-channel and if the QoS is less than a desired QoS, decreasing the value of N and repeating allocating symbols, determining the probability of reception error and solving for the QoS. Another aspect includes asymmetrically allocating spreading codes to a stronger eigen sub-channel and to a weaker eigen sub-channel such that the stronger eigen sub-channel is allocated more spreading codes than the weaker eigen sub-channel; and transmitting all systematic bits of turbo coded information over the stronger eigen sub-channel.

Method and apparatus to balance maximum information rate with quality of service in a MIMO system

In a MIMO delay spread (OFDM) system or a MIMO single carrier (non-OFDM) system wherein a transmitter transmits signals to a receiver through multipath fading channels, an equivalent frequency-domain MIMO multipath channel matrix is used to estimate the maximum mutual information regarding the relationship between transmitted signals and received signals. It is possible to compute the upper bound of the maximum mutual information at least based on the total energy of all resolvable paths in the fading channels. The upper bound or the changes in the upper bound can be used to adjust the transmission parameters used in data transmission. The transmission parameters include the modulation order in the modulation process, the code rate and the puncturing rate.

Method and device for transmission parameter selection in mobile communications

Apparatus, and associated method, for forming a signal exhibiting space-time redundancy

A method to increase diversity in MIMO fading channels interleaves coordinates of complex symbol(s) in a transmission frame after encoding and modulating. Specifically, an input signal is encoded and modulated into a codeword, jointly across at least two pipes, said pipes having space, time, frequency, or other nature, wherein the codeword spans a frame and is defined as at least one complex symbol whose complex values are all those to be transmitted during all channel uses covered by the frame. Each of the complex symbols have a first and second coordinate. After modulating, which may be combined with encoding in a signal space encoder, the coordinates are interleaved. In modulation, the complex symbols (typically two dimensional) may arise as elements of a multidimensional (typically greater than two dimensions) signal constellation, in which case those multidimensional constellation coordinates are the ones that are interleaved in the frame. The frame carrying the interleaved coordinates is transmitted by the first and at least second antennas, possible opposed sub-frames of the overall frame being transmitted separately by opposed antennas. A coset selector is used in some embodiments to maximize a minimum Hamming distance, and/or a minimum Euclidean distance, between coordinates within a coset to control diversity and/or coding gain. In some embodiments, the operation of the encoder and modulator is such as to maximize a minimum coordinate-wise Hamming distance, and/or a minimum Euclidean distance, between allowable codewords, and/or to provide additional structure for the allowable codewords. A method, transmitter, system, and mobile station are described.

Method and apparatus using coordinate interleaving to increase diversity in a MIMO system

Apparatus, and an associated method, for encoding digital data to be communicated by a sending station, such as a base transceiver station of a cellular communication system. Space-time diversity is provided pursuant to the encoding, thereby to facilitate communication of data upon communication channels susceptible to fading conditions. A systematic and recursive space-time coder includes a coset selecting coder for forming coset addressing values used in connection to a multi-dimensional constellation. The coset addressing values are used by a signal entity selector to select a multi-dimensional constellation entity.

A method, and associated apparatus, for a sending station operable in a communication system, such as a cellular communication system. A codeword is formed which, when transmitted upon a channel, exhibits a selective level of space and time diversity. A TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation) scheme is provided for a multiple-antenna transmitter which accommodates transmit diversity by way of the multiple antennas without requiring the need to utilize multiple Trellis Coded Modulation techniques.

The modulator includes a mapper for mapping modulator output symbols to a set of antennas. The modulator ensures that an Orthogonality Condition is satisfied to impart maximum transmission diversity upon the data sent over the fading communication channel.

A receiving and transmitting apparatus includes receiver circuitry, sampling circuitry, downlink prediction circuitry, uplink prediction circuitry and gain calculation circuitry. A downlink signal is received at the receiver and sampled at the sampling circuitry. Downlink and uplink prediction circuitry is used to estimate transmission properties of the downlink and uplink signals, respectively. The downlink and uplink prediction circuitry estimates downlink and uplink signal properties based on a sequence of previous downlink signal samples and the uplink estimates, respectively, as well as corresponding sequences of tap coefficients. The gain calculation circuitry is coupled to the uplink predication circuitry and to a transmitter and can set a transmitter gain level based on the predicted uplink signal properties. A method of controlling power in a communication device includes storing a sequence of downlink signal samples, calculating a downlink signal estimate and an uplink signal estimate, and setting a transmission power level based on the estimated uplink signal. The downlink signal estimate is calculated using the sequence of downlink signal samples and a first sequence of tap coefficients. The uplink signal estimate is calculated using a sequence previous uplink signal estimates and a second sequence of tap coefficients.
