A technique facilitates smart alarming, event detection, and/or event mitigation. The smart alarming may be achieved by, for example, automating detection processes and using advanced signal processing techniques. In some applications, event detection is enhanced by combining different alarms to facilitate diagnosis of a condition, e.g. a pump condition. The occurrence of certain unwanted events can be mitigated by automatically adjusting operation of a well system according to suitable protocols for a given event.

Well alarms and event detection

A technique facilitates testing and monitoring of a well. An artificial lift system is operated to produce a well fluid, and data is collected as the artificial lift system is operated at different flow rates. The data collected at the different, e.g. varying, flow rates is used in estimating flow performance and to enable continued monitoring of the well. In some applications, the data may be obtained by utilizing a virtual flow metering technique.

Well testing and monitoring

A system can include a housing that defines an interior space; a shaft disposed at least in part in the interior space of the housing where the shaft includes a longitudinal axis, a curved surface and an end surface; a submersible electric motor operatively coupled to the shaft where the submersible electric motor includes a cable connector; two proximity sensors where each of the proximity sensors includes a sensor aperture disposed in the interior space of the housing; and circuitry operatively coupled to the proximity sensors that determines position values of the shaft with respect to time based at least in part on output of the proximity sensors.

A technique facilitates automatic commissioning operations on pumping systems, e.g. electric submersible pumping systems. The automatic commissioning technique employs closed-loop monitoring and control processes which may include monitoring of pump shaft direction and speed measurements. In many applications, the technique reduces the time and manual effort otherwise involved in commissioning pumping systems in well completions. Embodiments also may be employed in automated decision-making related to commissioning and in determining operational settings based on sensed environmental and/or well performance conditions.

An electric submersible pump (ESP) can include a shaft; an electric motor configured to rotatably drive the shaft; a housing; a stack of diffusers disposed in the housing; impellers disposed in the housing and operatively coupled to the shaft; and a proximity sensor operatively coupled to the housing.

Proximity sensor system for electric submersible pumps

A system and methodology are provided for improving telemetry over a three-phase electrical power cable of the type used to provide power to electric submersible pumping systems or other powered devices. Data communication is provided between one end of a three-phase electrical power cable coupled with an electric power source and the other end of the three-phase electrical power cable coupled to a powered device, such as an electrical motor. The system and methodology enable a reduction in the level of common mode noise generated by, for example, a variable speed drive and/or enable minimizing or eliminating the common mode noise before mixing with data communication signals.

An electric submersible pump system can include a multiphase electric motor operatively coupled to a fluid pump where the multiphase motor includes a wye point; telemetry circuitry operatively coupled to the wye point where the telemetry circuitry generates AC telemetry signals; a multiphase power cable operatively coupled to the multiphase electric motor; and a tune filter operatively coupled to the multiphase power cable where the tune filter passes and amplifies AC telemetry signals generated by the telemetry circuitry, the AC telemetry signals being transmitted to the multiphase power cable via the wye point. Various other apparatuses, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

Telemetry equipment for multiphase electric motor systems

Event-based telemetry for artificial lift in wells is described. An example downhole system can sense triggering events and anomalies in a well or electrical submersible pump (ESP) string, and send information about the triggering event with priority to a monitoring and control system. A telemetry manager can select specific sensors to address the triggering event, and then determine how frequently the selected sensors acquire or sample sensor data. The telemetry manager may then assemble a data stream that prioritizes the sensor data for transmission on limited bandwidth, thereby sending the most important data about the triggering event with the highest priority, even when there is limited transmission bandwidth available.

Event-based telemetry for artificial lift in wells

This disclosure is drawn to methods, systems, devices and/or apparatus related to power control in applications over long cables. Specifically, the disclosed methods, systems, devices and/or apparatus relate to power control that considers the maximum power available at the end of a long cable (or from a battery) to a load over a broad range of load conditions. Some example systems may include a power supply located at the Earth's surface and a power converter coupled to the power supply via a cable having a first end coupled to the power supply and a second end coupled to the power converter. Some example power converters may be configured to measure the power being consumed by the electrical load in the well, and adjust operating parameter(s) of the electrical load based, at least in part, on the maximum power available at the second end of the cable.
