An apparatus and method for remotely controlling household appliances connected to a home network. A power line and a network processor is installed in each household appliance, enabling a household appliance user to remotely control the appliances from a place outside of as well as inside a home. Information about all conditions of the household appliances can be displayed on a screen displayable household appliance so that the user can recognize the operations of the appliances even during spare moments. A low-price built-in server is installed in each household appliance to assign the corresponding appliance a unique IP address simply over the Internet to be controlled according to an external user control command. A home server is connected to each of the household appliances such that the corresponding appliance receives a control command, sent in transit by a user from a mobile terminal.

Apparatus and method for remotely controlling household appliances

A system and method for controlling a plurality of home appliances provided in a building, wherein home appliance built-in communication modules are each adapted to convert information in an Ethernet standard format into that of a home appliance standard format and adapters are provided to connect the home appliance built-in communication modules to a phoneline network alliance (PNA) provided in the building to transmit and receive information therebetween. The home appliances can be controlled over a network using an existing telephone line. The adapters allow interconnection of the plurality of home appliances with no distance limitations.

The system comprises an input unit for inputting a command for washing machine operation control from a user, a controller for generating an operation control signal in response to the command inputted by the input unit to control the operation of a washing machine, and processing data regarding a use history and abnormal state of the washing machine, an operation drive circuit for driving a washing tub in the washing machine and supply/discharge of wash water in response to the operation control signal from the controller, a communication unit for supporting a communication function to transmit and receive the data processed by the controller externally over a communication network, a service provider connected to the communication unit for collecting the data from the controller, comparison-analyzing the collected data and generating control information for the setup of an optimum washing environment of the machine as a result of the analysis, and an output unit for externally displaying the control information from the service provider and its result processed by the controller. A using pattern of the user or an abnormal state of the washing machine is sensed and managed online, thereby improving the reliability and performance of the machine.
