A receiver is presented, such that the receiver may be configured to receive transmissions in accordance with a continuous waveform and to relock quickly on a received transmission when the transmitter is switched or a change in the waveform parameters is made. The receiver may be configured to support reception of a shared channel and/or of a channel allocated for SCPC usage and may be modified while used (e.g., dynamic SCPC). In addition, a satellite communication system is presented, the satellite communication system comprising at least one receiver in accordance with the above-described receiver. The satellite communication system may be configured to utilize the receiver's characteristics for at least the purpose of achieving a highly efficient return link channel.

Dynamic receiver

Providing quality of service (QoS) for applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and enforcing service level agreements (SLA) are major requirement in any current and future communication networks. On the other hand, more communication networks are employing adaptive transmission mechanisms, such as DVB-S2 ACM in satellite communication networks. In non-adaptive networks, QoS enforcers use static bit rate configurations. However, using a static bit rate configuration in an adaptive network may result in underflow situations, during which it may not be possible to utilize the full capacity of the transmission channel and expensive resources may therefore be wasted, In addition, using a static bit rate configuration in an adaptive network may result in overflow situations, during which it may be necessary to drop user traffic packets and therefore quality of service may not be maintained. It is therefore imperative that QoS enforcers have knowledge of the network's available bit rate at all times. This invention describes a method for achieving exactly that.

End-to-end quality of service and flow control for adaptive channels

A satellite communications system comprising a Hub station and a plurality of terminals, the system is configured to utilize a FWD link and a RTN link in accordance with adaptation techniques for relevant transmission properties (e.g. modulation, coding, transmission power, etc.) and to use adaptive margins to ensure proper reception of transmitted information under various link conditions. Methods are presented for determining said adaptive margins in real time or substantially in real time, and for setting relevant transmission properties in accordance with the determined margins. Adaptive margins may be determined either directly or following the determining of a link state for each of the FWD link and the RTN link.

Adaptive fade mitigation

A satellite communication terminal may comprise an outdoor part and an indoor part. Either the indoor part or the outdoor part may comprise a modem configured for communicating with a hub of a satellite communication system via a satellite and the outdoor part of the terminal. Methods are presented for sending indications from the outdoor part of the terminal to the modem, for example, to provide a person that may be installing the terminal with some control over the flow of the installation process while remaining outside (e.g., in the vicinity of the outdoor part of the terminal). In some embodiments, such indications may be used for triggering cross-polarization measurements and/or providing more elaborate information to the person installing the terminal without the need to leave the outdoor part of the terminal.

Packing data over an adaptive rate link

In a satellite communication system, comprising a hub and a plurality of heterogeneous terminals, the hub may split a bandwidth segment designated for a forward channel into at least two carriers, wherein some of the terminals may listen on a first carrier and some other terminals may listen on the at least second carrier. In this system, the hub may re-arrange the split of the bandwidth segment between the various carriers populating it in real-time or substantially in real-time, while the carriers are actively transmitted, and without causing loss of service and/or loss of data to terminals listening on those carriers. The terminals may be configured to track the carriers as they are re-arranged and to maintain seamless service to the end user throughout the re-arrangement process.

Multi-carrier satellite network supporting heterogeneous terminals

To allocate a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) to a modulation and coding pair (MODCOD) in a second generation digital video broadcasting satellite (DVB-S2) adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) system, a hub periodically transmits pilot frames of alternating MODCODs, which are identified by the VSAT. A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) at the VSAT site maintains telemetry of good and bad frames. A processor may then poll this telemetry to determine an optimal MODCOD to be allocated to the VSAT.
