Disclosed herein are compounds and compositions useful for reducing the risk of infection. In particular, disclosed herein are mandelic acid condensation polymers, compositions comprising such compounds, processes for producing such compounds, and methods of using such compounds.

Mandelic acid condensation polymers

A device and method is disclosed for the identification, concentration and isolation of a chemical compound from a mixture of compounds on the basis of the binding affinity of the chemical compound to a macromolecule or complex thereof, that is, to a receptor. Both the compounds to be assayed, and the macromolecules to which the compounds may bind, are free in solution. The method comprises contacting a mixture of compounds in solution with a solution of macromolecules or complexes thereof in a device possessing an ultrafiltration membrane to retain the receptor and bound compound receptor complex; washing through the device non-bound compounds; and releasing a bolus of the bound compound which passes through the ultrafiltration membrane where it may be analyzed chemically and/or spectrally (e.g. mass spectrometry) and/or bioassayed. The device includes a barrier such as an ultrafiltration membrane separating a binding chamber and an effluent chamber. An inlet port and wash port connect to the binding chamber. An effluent port connected to the effluent chamber is directed to analyzer equipment. Stirring means may be located within the binding chamber.

Method for generating and screening useful peptides

The invention allows the generation and screening of a large population of peptides for the presence of peptides which bind a particular macromolecule or macromolecular complex with high affinity, and further allows the favored net synthesis of analyzable quantities of such peptides, by using as the 'trap' a macromolecule or macromolecular complex for which binding of the peptide is desired. The starting mixture is preferably spiked with a peptide having some affinity for the target macromolecule so that mutation of the spike or 'lead' peptide is favored. The development of improved binding peptides through scrambling may be dynamically monitored by initially binding the target with an insolubilized ligand, and then looking for an increase in the concentration of the target in the soluble phase as a result of the displacement of the reference ligand by scrambled peptides.

Novel azaprostanoic acid analogs of the formula ##STR1## wherein: R is C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl or benzyl; and a has a value of from 0 to 6 inclusive, and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts and esters. Preferred 13-aza and 15-aza compounds are active in the inhibition of arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation and, more specifically, are direct and specific antagonists of the activity of prostaglandin H.sub.2 and thromboxane A.sub.2.
