A prosthetic device, such as an acetabular cup, includes a shell, a liner and a bearing. The bearing may be coupled to the liner so as to form a bearing-liner subassembly. A kit for assembly of a modular joint prosthesis includes at least two stem-body elements sized for insertion into the shank of the bone and at least two head members sized to replace one bearing surface of the joint. Each stem-body element includes a collar to be superimposed on the resected level of the bone, said collar providing a male taper at its outer diameter. Each head member is formed with an inner surface providing a corresponding female taper for receiving the male taper of each stem-body element. The engagement of the female taper on the male taper defines a space above the collar and a passageway extending from the space between the head member and the collar and provides a mechanical connection between the head and the stem-body element.

A joint prosthesis including a first element comprising a joint bearing surface and a second element which has an integral stem and body portion. The body includes a collar having a male taper outer surface configured to engage a complementary female taper surface formed in the joint bearing surface of the first element. An assembly (10) for positioning a prosthetic acetabular cup assembly (110) in a patient's hip is provided. The assembly (10) includes a bearing component (114) having an inner bearing surface (134) for receiving a femoral ball and an outer surface (132) attachable to a shell component (112) The shell component (112) is attached to an acetabulum to replace a natural hip socket. The shell component (112) includes an inner surface (120) defining a cavity (126) for receiving the outer surface (132) of the bearing component (114) therein. The assembly (10) includes a handle (12) attached to a split head (30). The split head (30) is divided into first and second gripping elements (36, 38) that jointly form a gripping surface to engage the inner bearing surface (134) of the bearing component (114). The assembly (10) holds the bearing component (114) at a selected orientation with relation to the shell component (112), and is used to drive the bearing component/shell component (114/112) into the acetabulum.

Acetabular cup impactor

A prosthetic acetabular cup assembly includes a single piece bearing component having an inner bearing surface for receiving a ball attached to a femoral prosthesis and an outer surface. The assembly also includes a shell component for attachment to an acetabulum to replace a natural hip socket includes an inner surface defining a cavity for receiving the bearing component therein. The inner surface of the shell component is formed to include an arcuate groove therein. A formed wire is situated in the arcuate groove of the shell component. The wire is configured so that a portion of the wire extends radially inwardly from the arcuate groove of the shell component to engage an arcuate groove formed in the bearing component to retain the bearing component inside the shell component. Anti-rotation lugs are formed on the inner surface of the shell component to cut into the outer surface of the bearing component as the bearing component is inserted into the shell component to prevent rotation of the bearing component relative to the shell component.
