A method and apparatus for configuring an electronics device. The method includes receiving, by the electronics device, a request for a command to perform a predetermined operation by the electronics device and sending the command in response to receiving the request. The electronics device then receives a signature based upon the command, whereupon the electronics device verifies the signature by the electronics device and, following an affirmative verification, executes the command for performing the predetermined operation. In this way, the electronics device may be reconfigured remotely without knowledge of the particular command for performing the predetermined operation by the electronics device.

Method and apparatus for configuring an electronics device

Methods and system for validating facsimile communications by ensuring that each detected facsimile calling tone is actually a facsimile calling tone that was generated by a sending facsimile device. The method can include establishing a connection between a sending facsimile device and a receiving facsimile device, which was initiated by either the sending facsimile device or the receiving facsimile device. The connection can be utilized for at least one of facsimile communication, voice communication, and a combination of facsimile communication and voice communication. The method can also comprise switching the receiving facsimile machine from a voice-capable mode to a facsimile mode once at least one facsimile calling tone is detected after a first facsimile calling tone is detected while the receiving facsimile device in the line monitoring mode.

Method and apparatus for validation of facsimile communication

A method of communicating with a shared imaging apparatus connected to a computer network, wherein communication over the network is facilitated through use of network packets, includes the steps of providing the shared imaging apparatus with networking hardware; providing the shared imaging apparatus with imaging apparatus firmware; defining a data channel associated with the networking hardware; instructing the networking hardware to accept information on the data channel from a user that owns the data channel; processing automatic Internet Protocol (IP) address negotiation network packets with the imaging apparatus firmware when the data channel is not owned; and processing second types of network packets, different from the automatic IP address negotiation network packets, by the networking hardware of the shared imaging apparatus when the data channel is owned.

A method for operating a device (such as a printer) having a first interface (such as USB interface) connectable to a first computer and a second interface (such as an Ethernet interface) connectable to a second computer. A phase lock loop (PLL) circuit is obtained which is driven by a clock source, which is adapted for switching between operating at the first and second clock frequencies, and which is operatively connected to the first and second interfaces to provide a clock signal to the first and second interfaces. The PLL circuit is operated at the first clock frequency when the first interface is active and is operated at the second clock frequency when the second interface is active. A device includes the first and second interfaces, the PLL circuit, and the clock source.

A system and method for transmitting multiple data streams from a host to a printing device. Data streams are arranged according to color, segmented and compressed, if desired. If compression is used, each segment may compressed with a different compression algorithm. Each segment contains a header describing the size of the data in the segment. The host transmits a print header containing information and instructions necessary for the print device to reassemble and process the data segments to produce a printed item.

A method for negotiating an Internet Protocol (IP) address for an imaging apparatus connected to a network includes the steps of controlling network communication between the imaging apparatus and the network; defining an imaging state when the imaging apparatus is available for imaging, wherein during the imaging state the imaging apparatus waits in an idle state during periods of non-imaging; defining an automatic IP address negotiation state when the imaging apparatus is not available for imaging; if the imaging apparatus is in the idle state, then determining whether the imaging apparatus should leave the imaging state and enter the automatic IP address negotiation state; and when the imaging apparatus is in the automatic IP address negotiation state, then attempting to automatically assign an IP address to the imaging apparatus.

The invention provides a method for aligning multiple color ink jet printheads to provide ink droplet placement within about {fraction (1/600)} inch of desired droplet location. The method includes providing an ink jet printer containing a printhead carriage for retaining a black ink printhead and a multi-color ink printhead thereon. The black ink printhead contains a black ink pen and the color ink printhead preferably contains at least two pens for providing droplets of ink on a print media. A color pen is selected to provide reference vertical and horizontal alignment patterns rather than using a black pen as the reference color. This enables a smaller error for alignment than provided with conventional alignment patterns.

The invention provides a printing apparatus for printing an image having a spatial resolution onto a print medium. The printing apparatus includes a printhead having a plurality of printing elements for ejecting ink droplets having a mass onto the print medium, and a temperature sensor for sensing a temperature of the printhead, producing a temperature signal. The apparatus also includes a media sensor for determining what type of print medium is loaded in the printer and producing a print medium signal based on the type of print medium installed in the printer. A plurality of heating devices are located adjacent the printhead for adjusting the temperature the printhead. The apparatus includes a printer controller for receiving the temperature signal from the temperature sensor and the print medium signal from the media sensor, and determines the ink temperature based on the print medium signal, and activates the heating devices to maintain the temperature of the printhead within a desired temperature range that is dependent upon the print medium signal.

A printhead temperature monitoring system includes a processor having a top priority interrupt input, a normal priority interrupt input, and at least one input for receiving temperature related signals. The processor is programmed or otherwise operable to calculate a printhead temperature based at least in part upon temperature related signals read on the input. A single timer circuit provides interrupt signals to the interrupt inputs of the processor. An interrupt control circuit is connected between the single timer circuit and the processor for selectively controlling application of timer circuit interrupt signals to the top priority interrupt of the processor and the normal priority interrupt of the processor.

Printhead temperature monitoring system and method utilizing switched, multiple speed interrupts

A computer system having suspend and resume capabilities that uses the hard drive to extend the amount of nonvolatile memory (NVRAM) in the system. As the system is powered down, the system processor saves to the hard drive system parameters such as: resource allocation data determined pursuant to the Plug & Play specification, total power on hours for the system, the number of power on cycles for the system, error codes, and the dates the errors occurred. The saving to hard drive begins responsive to circuitry monitoring the primary (AC input) portion of the power supply indicating that the power supply input is out of tolerance, as would occur when the user actuates the power switch to turn the system off or during a blackout. During the period of reliable processing time remaining, the above system parameters are written to the hard file. The system parameters are also saved to the hard file during the controlled power off that occurs as the system state is suspended.

Disclosed is a split computer system that includes a first housing coupled to a second housing with a multi-conductor cable. The first housing includes a first direct access storage device (DASD) having an opening for receiving a removable storage medium. The second housing is separate from the first housing and includes a central processing unit (CPU) coupled to a local bus and an expansion bus, a non-volatile storage device coupled to the local bus, a second DASD coupled to the local bus and a power supply. The system further includes first and second DASD controllers coupled to the first and second DASDs respectively. The cable has one end coupled to the first housing and another end coupled to the second housing for electrically connecting devices in the first housing to devices in the second housing. The second housing has a first interface coupled to the expansion bus and the cable. The first housing also includes a second interface coupled to the cable and the first DASD. The system is operative to detect an access to either the first or second DASD controller and disable a current DASD controller and enable the other DASD controller.

System and method for controlling device which is present in media

Described is a personal computer system which includes a central processing unit (CPU) and power management circuitry (PMC) in circuit communication with the CPU. A power supply is in circuit communication with the CPU and the PMC and includes circuitry for selectively providing system power to the computer system and auxiliary power to the PMC (1) from an external source or (2) from an internal source. When the system is in a normal operating state and the external source stops providing power at a predetermined level (e.g., brownout or blackout) to the power supply, the power supply is operative to generate a control signal to the PMC and switch to its internal power source. The power management circuitry is characterized in that while in the normal operating state, responsive to the power supply activating the control signal, the PMC causes the computer system to change to the suspend state wherein the entire state of the system is safely saved to a non-volatile storage device.

A computer system having suspend and resume capabilities using multiple suspend timers. The multiple suspend timers execute such that the computer system suspends after a longer period of time of user inactivity when the system is powered up in an attended mode and suspends after a shorter period of time of inactivity when the system is powered up in an unattended mode. If the system awakens in an unattended mode and user activity is subsequently detected, the system changes to suspend after the longer period of time of user inactivity. The multiple timers are implemented either by a single timer restarted to two different values or by two independent timers having different expiration values.

Described is a personal computer system which includes a central processing unit (CPU) and power management circuitry (PMC) in circuit communication with the CPU. A switch is coupled to the PMC. A power supply is coupled to the CPU, PMC and the switch and includes circuitry for selectively providing system power to the computer system and auxiliary power to the PMC (1) from an external source or (2) from an internal source. When the system is in a normal operating state and the external source stops providing power at a predetermined level (e.g., blackout or brownout) to the power supply, the power supply is operative to change to its internal power and generate a control signal to the switch. The control signal causes the switch to activate a closure event and generate another control signal. In response to the activation of the latter control signal, the power management circuitry is operative to cause the system to change to the suspend state wherein the entire state of the system is safely saved to a non-volatile storage device.

A computer system having four states of power management: a normal operating state, a standby state, a suspend state, and an off state. A control unit controls transitions between the various states. The standby state is characterized by devices, such as a video controller and a hard drive, being placed into a low-power mode transparent to the operating system and the applications executing on the computer system. The suspend state is characterized by executing code being interrupted and the state of the computer system being saved to a file on the hard drive in such a manner that system power may be removed after the state of the computer system is saved to the hard drive. Later, after system power is restored, the state of the computer system is resumed by reading from the hard drive and loading it in such a manner that the operating system and application programs are not adversely affected. The normal operating state and the off state correspond to the typical on and off states of more conventional computer systems. A single switch causes transitions between the various states. A visual feedback device, such as an LED is used to indicate the state of the computer system. While no power management driver is active, the control unit delays state transitions until a suitable power management driver is active.
