A surgical probe and methods for targeted treatment of structures of the heart with heat and radiofrequency energy. The probe which is designed to operated by hand has a elongate member with a handle and an energy-delivering member in an adjustable loop configuration. The control placed on the handle allow the user to alter the length of the loop configuration of the energy-delivering member and to thus place energy-delivering elements located on the energy-delivering member at selected or targeted portions of the heart or structures within the heart. The elongate member is conformable and can be bent into different configurations to allow additional targeted treatment of the particular portions of the heart.

Surgical probe and methods for targeted treatment of heart structures

A system and method for repairing fractured long bones. A guide wire is inserted through an opening drilled in a proximal bone segment and pushed through the intramedullary cavity of the proximal bone segment, across the fracture site and into the intramedullary cavity of a distal bone segment. A dilator is inserted over the guide wire and pushed through the intramedullary cavity into the distal bone segment to a stop at the distal end of the guide wire. A flexible tube having a radially expandable distal portion is then pushed over the guide wire into the distal bone segment and against the dilator. A compression nut is threaded over the proximal end of the guide wire to engage the proximal bone segment and compress the flexible tube. Compression of the flexible tube deploys the radially expandable distal portion to anchor the device in the distal bone segment.

Orthopedic intramedullary fixation system

A deflectable guiding catheter generally having an elongated shaft with a deflectable distal section, a second lumen, a first lumen in fluid communication with a port in the distal end of the shaft, an elongated tapered deflection line within the second lumen, and reinforcement strands within a wall of the shaft. The first lumen is independent from the second lumen, and is therefore not obstructed by the deflection line. The longitudinal axes of the second lumen and first lumen are axially aligned with respect to one another, and are eccentric to the shaft longitudinal axis. The reinforcement strands and the deflection line extend in at least a portion of the deflectable distal shaft section to a location spaced proximally of the distal end of the deflectable distal shaft section.

Deflectable guiding catheter

A connection system which has particular advantages in medical devices such as electrophysiology catheters, and which minimizes the potential for unwanted electrical connections. A cable of the invention has a plurality of leads, with each lead terminated by a pin connector having a retractable insulative sheath so that the chance of unwanted electrical connections is minimized when the pin connector is not connected. The metal pin of the pin connector also has a nonconducting tip member to minimize the chance of short circuits.

The invention is directed to an intravascular device for occluding a patient's blood vessel by coagulating blood in a desired location within the blood vessel to form occluding thrombus therein by means of RF electrical energy which preferably has a frequency of about 0.3 to about 1.5 megahertz. The intravascular device is particularly useful in terminating arrhythmia in a patient's heart by occluding a coronary artery to terminate the flow of oxygenated blood to a region of the patient's heart where aberrant signals causing the arrhythmia either originate or through which they are conducted. The device may also be used to occlude other blood vessels such as in the treatment of intracranial berry aneurysms.

A method and system for detecting electrical activity within a patient's heart, particularly the electrical activity which causes arrhythmia, which includes a first intravascular device such as a catheter or guidewire having a plurality of sensing electrodes on a distal portion thereof which is disposed within one location of the patient's coronary vasculature and a second intravascular device such as a catheter or guidewire having a plurality of sensing electrodes on a distal portion thereof which is disposed within a second location of the patient's coronary vasculature to facilitate mapping the electrical activity of the patient's heart. Once the electrical activity has been mapped, therapeutic procedures can be initiated.

Method and system for using multiple intravascular sensing devices to

A guiding catheter for delivery of intravascular devices to a patient's coronary sinus. The guiding catheter has a relatively stiff proximal section and a relatively flexible distal section, the latter being about 1 to about 6 inches in length and being configured to subselect a branch cardiac vein leading to the coronary sinus. The distal shaft section preferably has a proximal portion which has a flexibility greater than that of the proximal shaft section, and a distal portion which has a flexibility greater than that of the proximal portion of the distal shaft section, and at least one of the distal portion and the proximal portion being shaped with a bend to facilitate entry within the patient's coronary sinus. An inflatable balloon may be disposed on the distal shaft section. The guiding catheter is particularly suitable for delivering an intravascular device for sensing electrical activity into a cardiac vein to detect such activity from within the blood vessel.

Guiding catheter for the coronary sinus

An electrophysiology catheter assembly having a deflection mechanism rotatably disposed within an inner lumen of the catheter so that deflection of the deflection mechanism within the inner lumen results in a deflection of the distal portion of the catheter. Rotation of the deflection mechanism within the inner lumen of the catheter allows universal deflection of the distal portion of the catheter about its longitudinal axis. The deflection mechanism may be first rotated and then deflected or it may be first deflected and then rotated in a deflected condition. The catheter shaft does not need to be rotated to change the shape of its distal portion.

This invention is a medical device. It is a multipolar catheter assembly optionally in combination with a guidewire. Each of the catheter and the guidewire may be sheathed and have multiple electrodes at their distal ends. Because of their size and flexibility, the catheter and the guidewire may be used at virtually any point within the vasculature particularly, however, within the cardiac arteries or veins, perhaps in conjunction with external electrocardiogram leads, to map the body's electrical activity. When used in the heart, they may be used to determine the source of a cardiac arrythmia. The intimate presence of the guidewire or catheter body in the cardiac vasculature allows the response time to changes in cardiac electrical activity is very quick. The invention is also a method for mapping the electrical activity of the heart by use of one or more of these inventive guidewires or catheters in the cardiac arteries or veins. They may also be used to determine the local electrical activity of any site within the body, such as in the brain.
