The present invention provides coating compositions for forming a toner coating and inkjet receptive coatings on a substrate containing a film forming polymer comprising (a) a monomer (monomer A) comprising at least one functionalized or unfunctionalized acryloyl moiety and at least one lactam moiety. (b) a N-vinyl amide monomer (monomer B), (c) an optional cross-linker (monomer B) and (d) a solvent. The coating compositions may further comprise an additional hydrophobic monomer moiety. The present invention further provides toner substrates and inkjet receptive substrates coated with the coating compositions. 

Coating compositions for forming toner coatings

The invention provides non-aqueous compositions comprising film forming polymers comprising repeating units derived from: (a) at least one monomer comprising at least one functionalized or unfunctionalized acryloyl moiety and at least one lactam moiety; (b) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized C-Calkyl (alk)acrylates, C-Calkyl (alk)acrylamides, and combinations thereof; and (c) at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized C-Calkyl (alk)acrylates, C-C(alk)alkyl acrylamides, and combinations thereof. The invention further provides applications of these compositions in various industrial arts, particularly in personal care. The invention furthermore provides water-resistant non-aqueous personal care compositions. Variables a, b and c are described herein. 

Non-aqueous compositions of polymers derived from monomers having acryloyl moiety and lactam moiety and applications thereof

Terpolymer compositions of vinyl caprolactam (VCL), dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) are described to coat substrates for use in computer printers, and provide advantageous print quality thereon.

Vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers having a very low residual vinyl pyrrolidone monomer level, i.e. &#x3c;100 ppm, preferably only 50 ppm, are made within an advantageously short production cycle, by post-treating an aqueous solution of the copolymer at an elevated temperature of about 120&#x2013;150&#xb0; C., preferably about 130&#xb0; C., under pressure, in the presence of a high temperature initiator, for a period of about 1&#x2013;4 hours, preferably 2 hours.

Process for making vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers having a very low residual vinyl pyrrolidone monomer level within a short production cycle

Copolymers of dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide and hydroxyethyl methacrylate having residual monomer levels of <2000 ppm and <500 ppm, respectively, are made by copolymerizing the monomers in a predetermined weight ratio in an aqueous-alcoholic solvent of defined composition. Substrates coated with these copolymers are capable of absorbing the solvents, e.g. water or organic solvents, of digital printing inks rapidly with dry times of <1 min.

A post-treatment process for making a water-resistant polymeric coating composition or a strongly-swellable polymeric gel includes providing a stable, aqueous two-phase polymeric composition by the steps of forming a reaction mixture in a reaction vessel which includes a water-soluble vinyl monomer, optionally with one or more water-soluble comonomers, first amount of a crosslinking agent, and water, heating the mixture, then periodically adding a predetermined amount of an initiator, and polymerizing at about 30-130&deg; C., optionally removing the resultant two-phase composition from the reaction vessel, adding a predetermined amount of an additional crosslinker or proteinaceous compound thereto, optionally coating the mixture onto a support, and optionally heating to further polymerize the mixture.

Post-treatment of a polymeric composition

A method of color inkjet printing on a substrate coated with a substantially colorless, 90-10 to 30-70, wt/wt, copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl imidazole, by inkjet printing dye images on the thus-coated substrate, characterized in that the dye images obtained exhibit excellent light fastness.
