A radiation carrier for carrying at least a radiation beam has, on a surface thereof, at least one excitation grating, for directing at least an excitation radiation beam directionally out of the radiation carrier, thereby illuminating a region of interest; and at least one structure for redirecting emission radiation emanating from the region of interest. Further a sensor is provided comprising at least one such radiation carrier and at least one detector, the structure being adapted for redirecting radiation from the region of interest into the at least one detector.

Radiation carrier and use thereof in an optical sensor

A device () for illuminating a particle comprises: a light waveguide () arranged on a substrate (); an output coupler () configured to output a light beam () forming a sheet-like shape having a cross-section which has an extension in a first direction being larger than a size of a particle; and a fluidic channel () arranged on the substrate () for guiding a flow of particles along a longitudinal direction of the fluidic channel (); wherein the sheet-like shape of the light beam () is arranged within the fluidic channel () and the first direction of the cross-section of the light beam () forms an angle to the longitudinal direction of the fluidic channel (). A system () for imaging the particle comprises the device, an array () of light-detecting elements (); and a lens () to converge light towards the array () such that each light-detecting element () detects light originating from a corresponding position in the fluidic channel ().

Device for illuminating a particle, and a system and a method for particle imaging

An optical excitation system comprises a substrate () comprising at least one delivery means (), for delivering analytes () into at least one region of interest (), at least one radiation carrier () for directing at least one radiation beam from the at least one radiation carrier () into the at least one region of interest (). The substrate () includes a thin lens system () comprising at least a first thin lens (), for collimating radiation from the at least one region of interest () to a remote detection system (). A particle sensor and sensing system comprising the excitation system are also provided, for example a modular particle sensor and modular sensing system, wherein the optical excitation system may be single use and disposable.

Particle detection using thin lenses

Embodiments described herein relate to a light coupler, a photonic integrated circuit, and a method for manufacturing a light coupler. The light coupler is for optically coupling to an integrated waveguide and for out-coupling a light signal propagating in the integrated waveguide into free space. The light coupler includes a plurality of microstructures. The plurality of microstructures is adapted in shape and position to compensate decay of the light signal when propagating in the light coupler. The plurality of microstructures is also adapted in shape and position to provide a power distribution of the light signal when coupled into free space such that the power distribution corresponds to a predetermined target power distribution. Each of the microstructures forms an optical scattering center. The microstructures are positioned on the light coupler in accordance with a non-uniform number density distribution.

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for cell recognition. At least one embodiment relates to a method for recognizing cell. The method includes receiving an image of the cell. The method also includes performing edge detection on the image of the cell. Further, the method includes detecting ridges within the image of the cell. In addition, the method includes quantifying an internal complexity of the cell by gauging a contrast of the ridges with an average of a Laplacian on the detected ridges.

System and method for cell recognition

Embodiments described herein relate to an imaging device, a method for imaging an object, and a photonic integrated circuit. The imaging device includes at least one photonic integrated circuit. The photonic integrated circuit includes an integrated waveguide for guiding a light signal. The photonic integrated circuit also includes a light coupler optically coupled to the integrated waveguide. The light coupler is adapted for directing the light signal out of a plane of the integrated waveguide as a light beam. The imaging device also includes a microfluidic channel for containing an object immersed in a fluid medium. The microfluidic channel is configured to enable, in operation of the imaging device, illumination of the object by the light beam. In addition, the imaging device includes at least one imaging detector positioned for imaging the object illuminated by the light beam.

Device and method for performing lens-free imaging

The disclosure relates to wavelength-controlled directivity of all-dielectric optical nanoantennas. One example embodiment is an optical nanoantenna for directionally scattering light in a visible or a near-infrared spectral range. The optical nanoantenna includes a substrate. The optical nanoantenna also includes an antenna structure disposed on the substrate. The antenna structure includes a dielectric material having a refractive index that is higher than a refractive index of the substrate and a refractive index of a surrounding medium. The antenna structure includes a structure having two distinct end portions. The antenna structure is asymmetric with respect to at least one mirror reflection in a plane that is orthogonal to a plane of the substrate.

Wavelength-controlled directivity of all-dielectric optical nano-antennas

A device and method for sorting objects immersed in a flowing medium are disclosed. An example device comprises a holographic imaging unit comprising one or more holographic imaging elements, a fluid handling unit comprising one or more microfluidic channels configured to conduct flowing medium along a corresponding holographic imaging element and at least one microfluidic switch arranged downstream of an imaging region in the microfluidic channel configured to direct objects in the flowing medium into a one of a plurality of outlets. The example device also comprises a processor configured to determine real-time characterizations of holographic diffraction images obtained for the moving objects. The processing unit is further configured to control the at least one microfluidic switch in response to the real-time characterizations.

Analysis and sorting of objects in flow

A device and method for sorting objects immersed in a flowing medium are described. An example device comprises a holographic imaging unit comprising a plurality of holographic imaging elements, a fluid handling unit comprising a plurality of microfluidic channels for conducting flowing medium along a corresponding holographic imaging element and a microfluidic switch arranged downstream of an imaging region in the microfluidic channel for directing each object in the flowing medium into a one of a plurality of outlets. The example device also comprises a processing unit configured to determine real-time characterizations of holographic diffraction images obtained for each of the moving objects, with each real-time characterization accounting for at least one predetermined object-type signature. The processing unit is further adapted for controlling the microfluidic switches in response to the real-time characterizations.

A plasmonic structure comprises a substrate and an electro conductor provided in or on the substrate. The electro conductor comprises a first part configured to provide a first series of plasmon resonance modes (for incident radiation of a first wavelength) and a second part configured to provide a second series of plasmon resonance modes (for incident radiation of a second wavelength). The first and second parts are functionally connected in a linkage region, wherein the electro conductor is shaped such as to form a capacitive gap. The electro conductor is further configured to direct radiation incident on the plasmonic structure of the first wavelength predominantly toward a first direction and to direct radiation incident on the plasmonic structure of the second wavelength predominantly toward a second direction, in which the first direction and the second direction are separated by an angle of at least 60&#xb0;.
