Apparatus and method for ultrasonic flow metering of viscous fluids. In one embodiment, an ultrasonic flow metering system includes an ultrasonic flow meter, a flow conditioner, and a reducer. The ultrasonic flow meter includes a pair of ultrasonic transducers arranged to exchange ultrasonic signals through a fluid stream flowing between the transducers. The flow conditioner is disposed upstream of the ultrasonic flow meter. The reducer is disposed between the flow conditioner and the ultrasonic flow meter to reduce the cross sectional area of the fluid stream flowing from the flow conditioner to the ultrasonic flow meter.

Ultrasonic flow metering with laminar to turbulent transition flow control

Apparatus and methods for proving a flowmeter. In one embodiment, a flowmeter prover includes a flow tube, a displacer, and a signal analyzer. The displacer is moveable in a flow passage of the flow tube. A magnetic target is disposed on the displacer. One or more inductive transducers are disposed on the flow tube and configured to detect the magnetic target as the displacer moves in the flow tube. The signal analyzer is configured to detect a maximum slope of rising and falling edges of a signal generated by the transducer responsive to the magnetic target traversing the transducer. The signal analyzer is further configured to determine displacer velocity based on the detected maximum slope.

Apparatus and method for determining displacer position in a flowmeter prover

A surge relief apparatus for sensing, tracking and responding to pressure changes in a flow system to prevent damage caused by transient pressure changes in the flow system having one or more conduits with fluid. The surge relief apparatus comprising a transient pressure sensor, a pressure sensor, a regular and a valve. The transient pressure sensor is in communication with an upstream conduit and is responsive only to the fluid in the flow system for sensing transient pressure changes and for generating a first signal continuously proportional to the rate of change of the pressure. The pressure level sensor is in communication with an upstream conduit and is responsive only to the fluid in the flow system for sensing pressure changes in the flow system and for generating a second signal continuously proportional to the pressure level in the system. The regulator is responsive only to the first and second signals from the sensors for producing a discharge signal when either the rate of the transient pressure change is greater than a predetermined value or the pressure level in the system exceeds a preestablished value, the discharge signal for continuously tracking the pressure differentiae in the flow system. The valve receives the discharge signal from the regulator and transfers by-pass fluid from the flow system for relieving the surge of pressure indicated by the rate of the transient pressure change or the pressure level in the system.
