A method for representing an extended color gamut digital image on a hard-copy output medium having a limited color gamut comprising the steps of adjusting the color values of the extended color gamut digital image to fit within the limited color gamut of the output medium to form a limited color gamut digital image, producing a limited color gamut output print from the limited color gamut digital image on the hard-copy output medium, determining a residual image representing a difference between the extended color gamut digital image and the limited color gamut digital image, and encoding the residual image on the output print using a digital encoding means such that the residual image and the limited color gamut output print are adapted to be used to form a reconstructed extended color gamut digital image.

A dual format pre-objective scanner (10), for use in a laser printer, having an incident beam (22) from input optics (12) incident on a polygon tower (14) comprised of a first polygon (20) having a first diameter and first number of facets and a second polygon (30) having a second diameter and second number of facets, rotating about an axis (42) common to both first and second polygon. The polygon tower (14) is moved in a vertical direction so that the incident light is directed in a plane approximately perpendicular to the axis rotation of the first and second polygon, at either the first polygon (20) or the second polygon (30). The polygon tower (14) is also moved in a lateral direction approximately perpendicular to the axis (42) of rotation of the polygon tower (14). To change size and formats, the polygon tower (14) is moved simultaneously both vertically and laterally so that incident beams on the facets of the first polygon (20) become incident on the facets of the second polygon (30) at approximately the same distance from a scan lens (16).

Dual format pre-objective scanner

A printer system includes (a) an f-.theta. lens producing lateral color aberration; (b) three laser light sources, each producing a light beam for use with said f-.theta. lens; and (c) modulators modulating these laser light beams at different data rates from one another. The ratio of the different data rates is being used to compensate for the lateral color aberration produced by the f-.theta. lens.

In an illumination system for a film telecine scanner of the type adapted to provide a line of illumination on the image frames of a film which is supported for movement in a film gate of the scanner, an improved light control system for adjusting the amount of light that is delivered from a light source to an integrating cylinder to take into account fluctuations in intensity of the light source and desired intensity changes in the line of illumination upon a change of scene in the image frames of the film as the film is being scanned. The light control system comprises an aperture defining mechanism, a position servo regulator that maintains the aperture at a desired aperture opening despite disturbances tending to change the aperture between aperture changes, and an intensity servo regulator that takes into account the lamp intensity in resetting the aperture to a new position in response to a commanded light intensity related to a scene change, whereby aperture changes may be effected within the time of scanning a single image frame. The aperture defining mechanism employs first and second movable blades placed at a location in the optical path and movable between a full open aperture position outside the optical path and to one of a plurality of stopped down aperture defining positions interrupting the optical path and the resulting illumination line intensity in the course of scanning a single image frame.

Illumination control system for a film scanner

In a laser imaging apparatus including a multifaceted polygon scanner, a technique for correcting facet reflectance differences to effect uniform laser light power output for all scanner facets. A set of facet reflectance look-up tables are determined as follows. Determine the relative reflectance for each facet of the polygon scanner. Calculate gain factors referenced to the minimum relative reflectance. Determine the relationship between laser power and DAC code value for the minimum reflectance facet for a number of measured values. Calculate this relationship for all 2.sup.n DAC code values to produce a look-up table for the minimum reflectance facet. Shift the laser powers by the relative reflectance for each other facet of the polygon scanner and back calculate the DAC code values that would yield the same laser powers as the minimum reflectance facet to produce look-up tables for the other facets.

Facet reflectance correction in a polygon scanner

Positioning of a scan line (L) relative to a recording medium drum (15) of a polygon printer is established by independently adjusting blocks (35, 36) mounted on a scan line generating optics module (10) through adjustments made to an external beam sensing fixture (52). Inverted V-notches (38) used for nesting the blocks (35, 36) onto cylindrical surfaces of drum bearings (33) are nested onto corresponding cylindrical surfaces of fixture ends (54, 55). X, z, .theta..sub.x and .theta..sub.z positions are then set by x and z direction adjustment screws (44, 45, 49, 50) mounted on a support structure (73) to make adjustments in the fixture positions against the bias of springs (100). Clamping screws (45, 46) pass through oversized holes (47, 48) on blocks (35, 36) to releasably lock blocks (35, 36) after adjustment. The z direction adjustment includes levers (85) and dual ball socket assemblies (95, 96, 97) so that adjustment of the .theta..sub.y position of fixture (52) will simultaneously occur to maintain a constant angle of incidence during adjustment, in response to the travel of a wheeled member (60) against a constant radius frame surface (70).
