The present invention relates to a method of monitoring oscillations that are liable to interact in an electrical power network, in dependence on measurement of AC waveforms in the electrical power network. The method comprises receiving first waveform data corresponding to an electrical quantity in each phase of at least two phases of three-phase AC waveforms at a location in the electrical power network. The method further comprises applying a transformation to the first waveform data to provide therefrom second waveform data corresponding to an electrical quantity at the location in a single phase representation, the second waveform data depending on the at least two phases.

Oscillations in electrical power networks

A method of controlling an electrical power network in which a sudden event which may lead to loss or excess of generation or load. The electrical power network comprises plural controllers, each controller configured to control an apparatus connected to the power network at a different respective location in the electrical power network. The method comprises determining the occurrence of the sudden and receiving synchronised quantities in each of the controllers each of the quantities corresponding to one of frequency and angle at respective different locations in the electrical power network. The method further comprises generating a control output from each controllers in dependence on the received plural quantities, each control output controlling its respective apparatus, each controller generating the control output independent of operation of any other controller and on an ongoing basis in dependence on ongoing receipt of the plural quantities.

Control of an electrical power network

The present invention relates to apparatusfor determining a condition of a network sectioncomprised in an electrical power network. The network sectionis configured such that electrical power flows to or from each of plural locations in the network section. The apparatusis configured to receive a first quantity in respect of a first location in the network sectionand to receive a second quantity in respect of a second location in the network section, each of the first and second quantities corresponding to a signal amplitude and a signal phase angle at its respective location. The apparatuscomprises a processorwhich is operative to determine a condition quantity corresponding to a loading condition of the network sectionbetween the first and second locations in dependence on the first and second quantities.

Method of determining a condition of an electrical power network and apparatus therefor

The present invention relates to apparatus () for determining a contribution of at least one grid subsystem of plural grid subsystems to oscillation in angle or grid oscillation in an electrical grid (). The apparatus () is configured to receive a first quantity which corresponds to oscillation in angle at a first grid subsystem (). The apparatus () is also configured to receive a second quantity which corresponds to oscillation in angle at a second grid subsystem (). The apparatus () comprises a processor () which is operative to determine a contribution of at least one of the first and second grid subsystems to oscillation in angle or grid oscillation with the contribution being determined in dependence on a phase relationship between the first and second quantities.

Oscillation analysis method and apparatus therefor

A method of controlling an output of a generation plant () that is connected to a bulk electrical power network () by an electrical route (). The method comprises determining () a phase angle difference between a first phase angle representing a phase angle of a voltage waveform at an output of the generation plant () and a second phase angle representing a phase angle of a voltage waveform at a location within the bulk electrical power network (). The phase angle difference is compared () to a threshold phase angle difference that represents a constraint on the electrical route (). The output of the generation plant () is controlled () based on the comparison to prevent overloading of the electrical route ().

Generation plant control apparatus and method

A method for determining the contribution of a grid subsystem () to oscillations in grid frequency experienced by an external electrical grid () in an electrical power network (). A measurement of grid frequency is taken in the grid sub-system () and/or the external electrical grid (). The measurement(s) of grid frequency can be used to extract oscillations in grid frequency in the grid subsystem () and/or the external electrical grid (). A measurement of active power is recorded on a transmission line () between the grid subsystem () and the external electrical grid (). The phase relationship between the oscillations in grid frequency and the oscillations in active power allows the contribution of the grid subsystem () to oscillations in grid frequency in the external electrical grid () to be determined.

Grid oscillation analysis method and apparatus therefor

A method of monitoring a high voltage electrical power system is described in which a system acquires measurements the small perturbations in power system parameters, from which are derived the system dynamic characteristics used to determine power transfer limits that take account of power system prevailing conditions. Further, a method is described that can be used to identify the probable source of power system oscillations that can limit secure power transfer.
