A method and apparatus for providing call admission control in a packet network such as an internet protocol (IP) network are provided. More particularly, a terminating endpoint of a logical connection on a packet network, e.g. an IP network, is provided with the ability to make a decision on whether to accept or reject an incoming call based on quality of service (QoS) indicator based on QoS metrics. These metrics indicate quality of service levels for specific logical connections and are accumulated over specified time periods.

Method and apparatus for providing call admission control in packet networks

An apparatus and method for providing a back out routine for a failed programmable hardware update is provided. In one embodiment, the method includes: a) storing a new software image for the programmable device associated with the hardware update, b) storing a previous software image for the programmable device, c) programming the programmable device to operate according to the new software image, d) determining if there is a failure associated with the programming step, and e) if a failure is identified, programming the programmable device to operate according to the previous software image, otherwise the hardware update to the programmable device was successful. In one aspect, the back out routine is provided for a program load failure. In another aspect, the back out routine is provided for a programmable device failure.

It is important to report alarm signals rapidly and reliably to the master control units responsible for automatically responding to these alarm signals. Advantageously this is accomplished by transmitting the alarm signals through a switching network of a telecommunications switch, using auxiliary signaling bits provided with each time slot that is switched through the network. The alarm signals are encoded in groups of eight, using one bit of each of eight related time slots to provide an alarm signal within one frame of a digital transmission signal.

In large multi-tiered hierarchical alarm systems for high capacity telecommunications transmission systems, it is important to notify the maintenance craft of only the highest alarm, and to notify only when the alarm has been validated by persisting for a sufficiently long time. Advantageously, this is accomplished by timing alarms and freezing the timing when a higher level alarm is detected. If the higher level alarm is no longer present, timing on the lower level frozen alarm signal continues until there is a timeout. A timed out alarm is reported to the maintenance craft.
